While it could have become a distraction, it has turned out to be less of one because the player is out for the rest of the year and, also, Melbourne and Geelong are reported to be into him (and so are also affected by this), but what the lack of comment from anyone (even Goodwin gave a no comment when asked) does tell us is that they are serious about a trade.

^Presumably every single trade opportunity would be considered as a matter of process, long or short odds, but particularly if there are known suitors or team deficiencies. Not to mention the knowledge gained from a finals series, which is a good test of where things stand in relation to the competition.

But the gap between that process and a deal that genuinely improves the club, is still a mountain to climb in it's own right, even if everyone happens to be on the same page.

And that's where those involved will really earn their money. They don't hand out Nobel prizes for winning a coin toss (will stay/will go), I'm afraid.

Graham Wright certainly has a lot of work ahead of him, although his task is slightly easier now that there are four clubs reported to be interested in a trade.

Loosing Grundy hurts less if we aren't paying part of his salary elsewhere, and if there's demand for him.

Then again, is losing him and increasing the available salary pool by $700k pa better than keeping him on $1M?

If Grundy is traded, whether it be for picks or players, do we look at signing Todd Goldstein for a year? NicNat is the other older ruckman available in free agency. McEvoy and Ryder have retired.

Footy is a ridiculously small ecosystem, making good trades even harder to find; it's not like trading soccer players across Europe (where 99% of everything said or surmised is also nonsense). To make matters worse, Grundy is also injured and coming off a long-term injury, devaluing him in the market and making a good deal even harder to come by.

You are putting a lot of stock in this hypothetical club who hands us everything we want and more, not to mention poor old Graeme Wright, who keeps a very low profile and never speaks publicly, but nonetheless must work miracles. Will you turn on him if he can't click his fingers like the Fonz and give you what you want and Grundy doesn't leave after all? Will you turn on McRae if the finals series reveals we had better keep Grundy after all?

I am okay with any deal by mutual consent that leaves the club better off, BTW. But the unsavoury maligning of Grundy, a bloke who carried the team for Buckley, I'm definitely not okay with, regardless of what he earns.

Thats exactly it. No one wants to hear about us paying him to play elsewhere.

Possible returns mentioned in the article:

MELBOURNE: Pick 17 (Dees could land Pick 14 from Freo for Jackson). Toby Bedford, Adam Tomlinson, Sam Weideman.

GEELONG: Pick 18. Esava Ratugolea, Jack Henry, Gryan Miers.

GWS GIANTS: Tim Taranto, Ian Hill, Tanner Bruhn.

HAWTHORN: Pick 6. Luke Breust, Jack Gunston.

PORT ADELAIDE: Pick 8. Mitch Georgiades.

Hawks and Port have the best pick. GWS have the best players. Some of the players listed wouldn't be a good return.

If we landed some good picks, could we package them up to get Draper out of Essendon?

Gotta say, getting Jack Henry (and keeping Oliver Henry) would be a pleasing move. Wonder if that can be done without involving Grundy?
