Norf let Wells go because he was an aging player with chronic leg issues.
Recruiting him was a gamble at best.
It didn't pay off.
Was a player of that quality worth the gamble? Yes.
At that price tag? Hmmm.

So which club in your fantasy land for trade for an uncontracted player?
You've missed the point here, I'm afraid - the clincher that will get us high value for this uncontracted player is that he isn't in our best 30, either. They'll come running, falling over themselves to give us a first-round pick. Just watch.

Oh come on, I’m not expecting anything in return. But it’s worth getting something instead of nothing, right?

What to get back in return for Cox …………….

Depends on what that something is. We could get a few old North striped jumpers and dye the blue stripes black I suppose

How big a paycut do you think would cover that before you could call it value - 95%?
Did we get bang for our buck during his time at the club? No.

Was it worth the risk while that premiership window was open? Yes.

Wells wasn't on the books by 2020, when the cap got stretched, so I don't really consider him part of the problem.

Except that some existing contracts that did extend to 2020 and beyond may have had money pushed back to free up the space to land him...

The 2021 Great Big Consolidated Trade & Draft thread

Post by inxs88 »

Now with the playing side of things out of the way, we Pies sycophants emotionally invest in all of the various media threads, rumours and click bait that are "players" the Magpies are "supposedly" inquiring about:

List:

1. Patrick Lipinski: 190cm. 85kg and midfielder from Bulldogs & 23 years old

2. Hayden McLean: 197cm, 97kg and Forward/Ruck from Swans & 22 years old

3. Dylan Stephens: 184cm, 76kg and midfielder from Swans & 20 years old

4. Jack Silvagni: 194cm, 91kg and Utility from Blues and 23 years old

5. Lochie O'Brien: 185cm, 82kg and mid/forward from Blues and 21 years old

6. Nathan Kreuger: 196cm, 93kg and Forward/Back from Cats and 22 years old

7. Jake Kelly: 190cm, 91kg and backman from Crows and 26 years old

8. Sam Weideman: 195cm, 94kg and forward from Dees and 24 years old

9. James Bell: 183cm, 84kg and forward from Swans and 22 years old

10. Jake Riccardi: 195cm, 93kg and forward/defender from Giants and 21 years old

11. Tom Lynch: 192cm, 87kg and forward from Crows and 30 years old

12. Tyson Stengle: 175cm, 74kg and forward from SANFL club Glenelg and 22 years old

Yes we would all like Adam Cerra and Ben King for a third round draft pick, but the above players seem to be that range we can afford whether it's by salary cap, late draft pick, pre-season number 2 pick or delisted/free agency levers. Some of the above would add value for existing gaps on the list and some maybe superfluous to needs, however to think that only "youth" should be targeted for 2022, well get used to regular finishes of 16th-18th on the ladder.

Thoughts?

You only need two bidders for Cox' services and he then becomes a third round or better draft pick. If the Bulldogs go out in first week there shall be repercussions for Stefan Martin, Lewis Young and Jordan Sweet. Other clubs thin in the ruck department include Swans, Gold Coast, Geelong, St Kilda, Hawks, Roos and don't rule out Freo with the Longmuir link , so you never know.

I like that most on the list are 20-23, with a couple 24 and 26. I reckon we make Wrighty Head of recruiting, President and coach as well.
