Worse than the Shaw years; 1996-1999?

Buckley may have been a average coach but his vision can’t be disputed
He never wanted Grundy signed on that stupid deal in the first place and has publicly said so
So right now he’s been proven to be a visionary
As for carrying the team to a grand final I think Pendles shoulders would be much sorer than Grundy’s in that case
On a separate note is Goodwin in line for coach of the year ?
Kingsley would be high on the list along with fly
But it only took Goodwin just over half a season to realise what a spud Grundy is and get him out the team to give his side a real chance to win a flag

It was obviously a stupid deal. So a coach just pointing his finger at others doesn't make him a visionary.
And making an equally obvious selection move doesn't make Goodwin coach of the year either. If he was such a good coach, he would have stopped Melb. recruiting the fella to begin with.

Geelong out of the Grundy race looking for a different option
Swans likely yo go with young ruck from academy and look for a cheap second stringer to tie them over
Looks like it will be a buyers market
There’ll be no bidding war just a washed up player sent packing to whoever will take him
It’s sad really just imagine had he had the courage and discipline to be a team player and want to learn his craft properly and be a asset to any team he played for

Just imagine if he'd any competent midfielders to support Sidebottom and Pendlebury in 2018. Grundy's Collingwood story is like many other all-time greats before him: too much was left to too few. In 2018, those 3 all-time greats carried them to the brink of a premiership but, when Sidebottom and Pendlebury had nothing left in the tank, Collingwood was over-run by a second-rate midfield. If only Collingwood hadn't recruited a whole lot of has-beens and never-was-ers to pad out the team (did they learn nothing from the Hafey debacle?), Grundy would be remembered as a Collingwood premiership great.
You don't lose a Grand Final because Sidebottom and Pendlebury are taken out of the game by hard tags - you lose a Grand Final because no-one else steps up to take advantage of the opportunities created by the opposition's negative play, despite your ruck winning the vast majority of the hitouts.
Grundy didn't fall short when it mattered - Collingwood did, however, field a team of mostly second-raters that day and our 3 genuine greats couldn't do it all themselves. Even then, with only 3 great players, Collingwood lost by less than a goal.
Look at the dross that took the field: Greenwood, Mayne, Aish, Phillips, Sier, Thomas, Varcoe, Stephenson, Treloar. But for the collective efforts of Grundy, Sidebottom and Pendlebury, those guys would never had had the chance to be genuine Collingwood losers in yet another Grand Final. Of course, they probably should have had the chance to lose another Grand Final in 2019 - but a special effort from Treloar ended that run, too.

Your take on history is amazing
Pendles was much better than Sidey by the length of the Flemington straight
Pendles was still effective but not as influential as he normally was
Sidey was taken out the game by that famous player Hutchings yes remember him ? Played around 9 more games before being delisted.
It wasn’t as much as how bad Sidey was it was also he couldn’t curtail Hutchings performance as well
It was actually sad watching how outclassed he was by a guy who struggled to get a game in the WAFL
Had Sidey taken out one of west coasts better players and it been a break even then we would have gone a long way to winning. But alas didn’t matter where Buckley moved Sidey he couldn’t find a spot for him to impact the game.
Grundy wasn’t besten he was thrashed by Lycett and Vardy in true ruck skills
Grundy won the hit outs but as usual constantly hit the ball at his own feet or down the throat of a west coast player the exact same reason he’s now the highest paid VFL player in history.
His inept ruck skills are a big reason he’s in the position he’s in now. Has nothing to do with his forward craft (he’s never had that) he went to a star studded midfield (as described by yourself when he left) and that same midfield went -44 centre clearances when he was ruck compared to +72 when Gawn was ruck. They both hit it to the same midfield but only one has true ruck skills the other is a over paid over hyped stat padder
If it wasn’t for Adams Treloar Crisp JDG the score line would have been much much worse
The biggest error made was at the selection table
Selecting Langdon was the determining factor why we lost
His 4 goals 3 he gave up directly to his opponents coupled with the magnitude of his horrendous errors is what lost the game
Do you need a replay to remember ?
Remember Q1 when we were running rampant looking at blowing them out the water ? Langdon from 6 inches out fails to push a rolling ball over the line for a behind instead pushes it towards goal falls over and the west coast player kicks it through momentum all gone
Q2 we have a 2 on 1 with the ball coming in. Instead of waiting back in case the balls spill over the back Langdon decides to go to the contest and only makes contact with Maynard leaving the ball to spill out the back open goal to west coast
Q3 completely misses his assigned man leading up but instead of folding back to help he stumbles into a retreating teammate (no idea what is going on around him as usual) (west coast should have credited him with a block really) leaving Kennedy free to take a uncontested mark
You clearly see at this point when the camera pans into the coaches box Buckley glaring at Longmire as if to say can’t you do something about this spud he’s costing us the game
Q4 game in the balance he gives away a free kick. He has the ball in his hands on the ground the west coast player standing so he just hands him the ball. Didn’t even get off his lazy ass just sat there handing him the ball. It goes forward Maynard is blocked and west coast mark it go bang and that’s the winning goal
Howe Goldsack and Maynard tried so hard to cover for his errors but in the end just couldn’t was too many of them
Had the coaches been smarter and benched Langdon at half time moved checkers back chances are we have a premiership trophy in the cabinet
Or if Moore or Scharenberg had been available we wouldn’t have had to play him in the first place and the result is likely different
History is what history is
We can’t change it no matter who much we wish we could
If we could Grundy wouldn’t have ever got the 7 year $7 million deal

Melbourne are re-writing history, being critical of Grundy as a forward.
It's Gawn's ineffectiveness as a forward that ruined it. Grundy was recruited as first ruck, and rest up forward to allow Gawn to become a KP Forward.
Gawn proved to be an absolute spud as a forward.

Now with Melbourne running out of players what’s the chance he gets a game ?
Well according to the coach none
Asked today about who replaces Van Rooyen he mentioned 4 options none named Grundy
With port today now offering Jordan Sweet a 3yr deal as they see him as a better option (yes I realise he couldn’t get a game at the bulldogs) it seems it’s not a matter which club Grundy would like to go to more so who will take him
This disaster could have been avoided years ago had we taken the 1st round draft pick offered for him and run away laughing at there misery

Okay let's look on the brightside: Grundy won't get Dropped by Melbourne ever again...

poor grundy.
hopefully he gets to a club that values him
Melbourne just said "250k a year is a small risk lets get him"
gawn had a broken toe and he still couldntt even make the team as an emergency! lol

So Goodwin conceded they took Josh Schache in as backup ruck in case Gawn big toe didn’t last
Josh Schache
Think about it for a minute
You’ve got a guy on your list getting paid nearly a million a year WHOS supposedly a #1 ruckman and you prefer to play Josh Schache as a backup ruckman
This sums up perfectly where Grundy’s career is
He’s been completely exposed as being so useless at his chosen craft that the club picks a guy who wouldn’t get a game as ruck in most VFL teams
Well luckily for Grundy Sydney are used to playing with a ruckman who is completely surplus to there ability to win
What they haven’t factored in though is Grundy’s ability to feed the ball to the opposition with such regularity that they’ll have to be winning it back 80% of the time
Well at least we know the swans can’t win the comp next season if they take him off Melbourne
Swans reportedly offering future 3rd round pick and willing to pay $400k of his salary
That’s basically his worth maybe a fraction over
