Flares....they caught fire....vs Essendon, Queen's Birthday - Des Tuddenham's return to Victoria Park game (as a Don) - packed out crowd? Circa 1971/1972.

Yes you are completely right as always.
1972 Queens birthday weekend game some Essenscum cheersquad member ran through our Race (Run Through) and broke it before our players came out. Then during the game an Essenscum supporter flicked a cigarette in the Collingwood Outer Cheer Squad's floggers, which set them on fire. Can't really remember a flare, but there has been a lot of champagne sipped since then.
Such was the uproar that they banned floggers just about immediately, couldn't even have those cute little pom poms.
When the return game happened at Windy hill later that year, the night before some bright spark (NOT) sent a call out that Windy Hills stands were going to be burnt down. Probably an Essenscum supporter.
What a night that was, I saw Billy Thorpe at the Essendon Town Hall, my first big time live band!
