Indian authorities have arrested a man who fled Australia after a car crash that killed a pedestrian and seriously injured another in Melbourne five years ago.

Indian student Puneet Puneet, 24, was charged over the crash that killed visiting 19-year-old Queensland student Dean Hofstee as he walked down City Road in Southbank in 2008.

A speeding car slammed into him and his friend Clancy Coker outside a city hotel.

At the time, Puneet was a learner driver and it is alleged he had been travelling at 150 kilometres per hour in a 60kph zone and had been drinking.

Mr Coker was also seriously injured in the incident.

Puneet pleaded guilty to a charge of culpable driving and later fled the country while on bail in 2011.

He was arrested and faced court in India yesterday where he was remanded in custody.

A date is yet to be set for his extradition.

What I've always wanted to know about this is - he fled Australia using a friend or relative's passport.... what happened to them? Do they get in any trouble for giving them their passport? Did they claim it was stolen by him? Were they given a new one?

Few old names in this thread, don't see hardly any of them here anymore.

Have to say, that's a pretty steep penalty for giving someone a passport. All sounds a bit OJ Simpson robbery case to me (we didn't get the guy we wanted when we wanted to, so we'll throw the book for something else).
