Pre Match: Pies v. Aints - all comments please

People are being a little harsh on Brent IMO.
Has been asked to fulfil a number of roles whilst at the club and has played mainly as a defensive midfielder this season at AFL level which doesn't generally allow him to rack up big numbers or play to his strength.
With the Cloke suspension don't fully understand the reasoning behind dropping Anthony and not recalling Medhurst, would have liked one more forward in the 22.
Like the idea of playing Reid up forward but can we afford that due to matchups?

I think MM is going with a similar strategy to what Carlton employed against the Saints in their win earlier in the year Swoop - that being, lots of quick small men from the midfield through to the forwards. I like Dawes and Brown being to only tall guys down there. Let's hope Leroy brings his kicking boots with him on Saturday hey?

I would have liked Maxwell in - only to tag Goddard all day (& smack him one every now & then) its just that Baker ain't there.
Also would have preferred Medders in.
I'm worried but then again I'm always worried before a big game.
Go Pies.

Yet Davis is in straight away, for his tackling? oh please.Adz wrote:Why would Medders be selected?
He has been awful all year and his vfl form is nothing to write home about.
No, he needs a month of BOG in the vfl to even be considered.
I hope Medders is not the new Marty Clarke, too good a player to start messing with his head Mick.

Macaffer will do the tagging job on Goddard. Lock it in Eddie.
Medhurst has put 2 solid games together. As has Fraser who has put 3 decent games together.
But I suppose they need a month to regain match fitness and touch. I think MM has a finals plan for them.
On Davis, yes he is probably getting selected on his tackling pressure alone. But note he leads the AFL for tackles inside 50, despite having missed 2 games.
So that's a huge component of our game in particular as the majority of our goals come from turnovers.
You simply need that in your side.
Medhurst and Josh lost their intensity and work-rate. So they have a higher hill to climb that Leon who has never stopped trying. Medhurst was perhaps a bit unlucky because I thought he work-rate has been ok.
But his record against the Saints is pretty bad.

Aside from sniper Baker, this is the strongest saints team. Whereas,we have no maxy, cloke or dick, and in my opinion, they would be in our strongest side. So, if we lose a close game, do we use injuries as an excuse, or just move on and hope for better times.?

^ I can't see how anyone can see this weeks game having any major significance come finals (other than what the 4 points it gains us on the ladder).
Only if it is a significant blow out (+10goals) will it hold any phsycological weight IMO.
A narrow win or loss IMO will simply mean what we already know. We are in the mix. And we have some good players left to make up our best 22 (if we ever have that luxury/luck come finals?).

For mine this game is worth 8 points in regards to where we finish on the ladder.
4 points we gain and 4 points we deny them will in the wash up of the season determine a top two spot!

Or at the very least to give me some confidenceRudeBoy wrote:Make no mistake, we need to beat one or both of the Saints and Cats BEFORE we face them in the finals. Only a victory will will give our team the confidence necessary to march to victory in September.

But still stand by my thoughts on it's bearing on finals games. Totally seperate beasts.
