Heater was a star but has flaws. He also has a chronic bad back which has plagued him for 3 years.
Adams was a high pick 2 years ago and has proven he was worthy of that high pick. I like the cut of his jib as he reminds me of Hannebery or marc murphy.
A fair trade imo.

My only reservation is that we already have josh thomas and beamer who play a similar style and role. We would need at least two of guys to show more versatility if they are all to play in the same side...

^^A good point. But I wouldn't be too concerned. I'd need to see more of Adams, but to me he's more of a Ball than a Beams. And that's good. We will need a Ball replacement soon, it's even possible 2014 could be his last.

The question will be on Thomas. It may be difficult to play all of Beams, Ball, Thomas and Adams through the midfield in 2014. But it will be good competition.

Oh, fair go Steve! Watching Greatest Waste-of-Space games are amongst the hardest to stomach in the AFL. Who wants to see cricket scores kicked against these blokes week-in, week-out? I for one can't.
Obviously, if we were told back in March that we were a chance to get T.A., then we all would most likely have taken more of an interest in their progress in 2013, to see how he goes about it.

It's always a lottery mate. Every time you trade, every time you make a draft selection, every time you don't trade when there is an offer in front of you .... it's always a lottery. We have both seen trades which looked like fantastic long-term value for us go horribly wrong (Wood, Woewodin, McKee). And we have both seen trades or picks which looked like nothing special or even like a really dumb idea turn up roses (Reid and Medhurst; Jimmy Clement; Leigh Brown).

You know this, of course. Life is a lottery. I reckon GWS have got this one wrong. Yes, they need experienced players to stiffen up their list, but Shaw will be 30 when they are into the start of their premiership window. Will he still be an A-grade player at 30? Maybe, maybe not. Depends on how his body holds up. I guess he will be effectively captain of the defence at GWS. How's he going to cope with that? More to the point, how are the kids around him going to respond to Heater shouting instructions at them all afternoon?

Lose: Shaw, Thomas, Dawes & Wellingham.

Gain: 5 first round picks inc: Grundy, Kennedy, Broomhead & picks 6 & 10.

to be fair, two of those first round picks come to us as of right. I think the right analysis is that Collingwood parlayed Shaw, Thomas, Dawes & Wellingham into Kennedy, Broomhead, Adams and 6 (we would always have had the right to draft Grundy and the 10 is ours as of right).

I still think that is a good outcome (certainly for the future), but the winner of that trade is unclear at this time.

I think its a good outcome because we had to correct the attitude problem that crept in after Mick left. Its also a good outcome because we didnt get nostalgic like a lot of premiers do and we didnt overvalue aging premiership stars.

we have had no problem putting beams, thomas and Ball into a side. It wont be hard to fit Adams, beams and thomas into one side either. what you are describing is a first class problem. If that is the only problem with this deal, i'll take that.

Beams made a better than decent half forward flanker early on, and he'd be amongst the best two or three HFFs in the league today if we played him there again. Not that we would, it would be a waste of an excellent rover.

Ball is handier than you might expect up forward: as I've said here before, I'm not averse to the idea of playing Luke Ball as a specialist forward pocket: he's not a bad mark, a pretty fair kick anywhere inside 50, knows all about getting hard ball inside packs, a great leader, and hard as bloody nails. Of course, he could usefully still have a run in the middle now and then to give our younger mids a rest from time to time.

The big worry with playing too many inside mids is that you wind up with a plod squad - remember when we had O'Bree, Burns, Holland and Licuria? All good players, but were were slow and some sides cut us up pretty badly. But the same doesn't apply to Ball, Thomas, Beams and Adams. Adams is quick for an inside mid, Thomas and Beams are both mid-paced (not speedsters but certainly not slow); only Ball counts as slowish amongst those four.

I reckon we will be fine.

Anyway, given that we are going to recruit two outstanding young midfielders with picks 6 and 10, who says that all four are going to be able to crack it for a senior game?

You could also add Lynch and Young, as they were largely signed as replacements for Dawes and Wellingham, and we'd not have been able to sign them both if they'd not left.
