Hine couldn't have foreseen Freeman's injury problems, and Kennedy, well let's wait and see if he stays or goes. Compared to most Hine has a great record he's bound to have a few loses in the draft.
The fact he's plucked a few gems with late picks I think we can let a couple slide here and there...
Why is it that people think Hine is a genius?
One flag in 12 years and tracking south.
His record isn't any better than Judkins and
Judkins is constantly bagged on Nicks.
So far Hine has been OK but nothing special.
Keep saying he is a genius as it makes for comical
writing.

Judkins overlooked Pavlich. Hine got bagged by just about everybody for going 2 Thomas and 5 Pendlebury when the general consensus was Ellis was better than Thomas and Pendlebury should have gone high teens. The next year I think he picked our premiership spine in Brown,Reid and Dawes. Then the year before last he picked Marsh and Langdon with late draft picks, neither of whom attracted much interest from any other clubs. Kennedy was all Australian U18 for two years running while Freeman has that burst of speed that complements our midfield. No one gets it right 100% of the time including Hine.

The consensus on Pendles was not that he would go in the high teens.
Plenty of people had him in the top 10.

I hope there is some truth in it, Ben seems to have a great attitude and knows how to get the pill, however his decision making and ball use is a real concern.
He is still young and I'd rate him as a late 2nd round or early 3rd round pick.

Caroline Wilson didn't rate him, that was a bonus!

He was pick 19 in a mini draft compromised year, in that draft Hine plucked Grundy at pick 18 and Broomhead at 20, how is Hine taking a hit?

BenKen had great endeavor and lousy skills, if we get a reasonable pick or swap for Howe and a late pick then I am comfortable with that.

Perhaps start a thread and ask why they think he's a genius? My post was more saying he's had more wins than loses in the picking quality talent, as far as the coaching and developing them that's on the coaching staff.
We should have had the 2011 premiership that was poor game planning that cost us that moreso than the players. For the most part need players to be able to take that next step, some have, some haven't we're building a new list now so we will see.
We've had some spuds, we have had some ok players, and then some high level ones, it's just getting the best out of them on Grand Final day and actually getting there that needs to be done now.
As far as Judkins goes, I never bagged him, he did the best like Hine to pick the best players for the club, it's not their fault they're not ready to transition from state leagues to AFL level.

You win some, you lose some.
Kennedy has plenty of heart and can definitely get the pill, but his decision-making and ball use are not quite up to AFL standard. I wish him well if he goes to the Dees, and hope we get some value trade wise for him.

Ben Kennedy looked like an absolute star when I saw him play VFL, but in the AFL I think he tightens up and tries SO hard that he chokes it up.
If he ever settles in somewhere he'll be a highly valuable contributor.

Fair point .
In the next few weeks I may start a thread about Hine/ Judkins
and ask why one is considered a genius and the other a spud.
