It's been a busy week so far for people feeling outraged and offended.

First there was the St Kevins boys and their "offensive" chant that had people tripping over themselves to shriek their outrage to anyone who didn't want to listen.

Today I see a piece about a Pole Dancing Studio in Blackburn getting threats of violence after advertising Pole Dancing classes for children aged 10 to 16.

I read it in the Herald Sun but here's a link to an ABC Radio piece on it.

So the villagers, suitably armed with burning torches and pitchforks, prepared to storm the studio claiming that it was sexualising children, imagining creepy old men furtively watching 10 year olds in skimpy clothes swinging on a pole and demanding that the building be burned down (or at least the classes be stopped)

Interestingly, many of the comments were of a similar stance which was "If you don't like it, don't send your kid but FFS stop shrieking"

Well I don’t tend to shriek unless 8m at the footy, the St Kevin boys, I bet their parents are pretty pissed, and the school should be, they were in school uniform. They don’t deserve to be expelled, but certainly, they deserve some punishment, and pole dancing! Talk about look for trouble! It’s a kardashian move! Call it gymnastics on vertical bars! Not sure why you've put offensive in inverted commas, as if it isn't offensive? It is, I saw the whole song. No place for that type of stuff in this day and age.

The pole dancing story reminds me of seeing an article the other day about K-Mart having to pull a Halloween costume off the shelves because of an online petition about it. The costume? A childs wedding dress. The issue the permanently offended had? It promoted child brides. FFS. Witches and zombies and vampires are all ok but a kid pretending to get married? Outrageous I reckon I had about 50 pretend weddings when I was a kid.

My daughter isn't some thin skinned petal, she's more than capable of looking after herself.

She's been putting down dickheads, both verbally and physically, for years. I have no need to get offended on her behalf.

Just remembered about that putrid “jokes” thread in the bored board (that was deleted, thankfully). Of course the author of that would find nothing offensive in the chant.

Some people can find offense in almost anything, they're wired that way, and social media lets them share that. If you think it's offensive, good for you. I thought it was crass and stupid, pretty much what you'd expect from high school kids.

I feel like every little phenomenon represents something bigger, or at least has the capacity to reflect broader social trends. An exercise club presumably run by normies just looking to make a buck (i.e. not shock artists, sexual deviants or political subversives) thought this was a completely acceptable and uncontroversial thing to offer, whereas a lot of equally normal people who saw the ad were horrified. Neither of those views emerged from nowhere, and both are quite understandable. That’s an interesting disconnect that merits exploration, I think.

It's a disconnect that happens all the time. In that example the polar extremes were on one hand you had parents who signed their kids up for the classes and the other hand parents who rang the place with threats.

Very few things are universally agreed, the majority are subjective based on individual perception. That's partly why I find the notion of people getting outraged and offended so badly, quite humorous.
