Ben Cousins - He's back (now at Richmond) [Merged Threads]
Moderator: bbmods
I think our board made a very good call on the Ben Cousins saga.
Instead of being berated they should be congratulated.
They don't get everything right but I think they got this one spot on.
Let me see. Rumour has it we asked for a hair follicle test and didn't get one from Ben. Now he shows up to an official AFL test with a buzz cut and his pubic area and armpit area has been waxed. If he was clean why would he do this? I don't trust him or the dropkick he calls his manager.

Oh FFS what a bunch of wowsers the AFL has become!
Benny Cousins has not hurt anyone but himself by his actions. How many footballers are addicted to the second most serious drug in our society - ALCOHOL?
I say second most serious, because it is only exceeded by tobacco as the most serious in terms of the numbers of people it kills. FACT: More of our society's kids are being killed by tobacco and alcohol (especially alcohol if you also include the violence it generates!) than any other so-called serious drug. Does Benny look like he's going to drop dead?
You look at the antics of some high profile footballers (who shall remain nameless) last season - all of them alcohol fueled, who brought the game into disrepute if that is your argument.
But no, no one will ever tackle the alcohol problem because it's a legal drug. But the two greatest killing drugs in our society are legal. Go figure. It's a mixed up world alright.
Give them all a flick Benny, the bunch of hopeless wowsers!

Well said Jack.
As someone who is partial to a beer/bourbon I'm not going to howl down your views about alcohol cos they are spot on. I'll even state I have taken speed before in my youth a couple of times but it did nothing for me so I have never taken it since.
I know someone who was with a certain number of AFL players from one club (not Collingwood) during their end of season trip O/S.
Numerous players were flying and it had nothing to do with alcohol nor we're they on a QANTAS jumbo.
Seriously most football fans would be stunned as to how many players take Ecstasy or similar drugs as they are non weight gaining instead of drinking beer.

The way things are going with society I would not be surprised if alcohol and sport sponsorship went their separate ways. Just like tobacco did some years ago.
Advertising of junk food has taken out of prime time kiddy TV by the government.
I think we will see the big VB logos come off cricket tops soon. Especially in the light of recent players comments.
Jack_Spain makes some good points above. But the wowsers can't control illegal drugs. They can control alcohol consumption.
Alcopop anyone?

I enjoy a drink as much as anybody Turtle and would be the last person to say it should be banned. But I have never binged, and this is a much more serious problem for our youth than "party drugs". What I said is merely to highlight the breathtaking hypocrisy on drugs in our society. The Collingwood Turtle wrote:Well said Jack.

Oh that's right, governments collect HUGE taxes on cigs and alcohol don't they! And then they spend millions on campaigns like, "Drink Drive, Bloody Idiot", "Quit", etc. to mop up the problems it causes.
The bottom line is this: The AFL is kidding itself if it thinks Benny Cousins is Robinson Crusoe!

that was interestingAlec. J. Hidell wrote:Here's a story that was told to me from someone who has an 'insight' into these things.
Suppose a club was really really interested in Cousins, in fact they were so interested they decided to do a few back ground checks. Those checks revealed that there was a possibility that all was not as it appeared on the surface, but the evidence was all pretty much circumstantial.
So the club says to Ben, "Hey Ben, we're really interested in you, but we would like to make sure you are, and have been drug free for a while, so would you voluntarily undergo drug testing via the 'hair follicle' method"
Ben does not give an answer and asks for a few days to confer with his Manager.
About a week goes by and the club asks Ben again
Ben still says nothing.
The Club reports the non-answer to its Board, and several members of the Board start to suggest the club should end all negotiations with Ben. Other members of the Board still want to deal with Ben.
The Football department of the club are keen to get Ben, but one assistant coach urges caution, because he got information from a newly appointed coach of another club, who was going to Ben's old club, that perhaps Ben was not as clean as it appears.
So this club is in a real quandary as to what they should do.
Ben has still not agreed to the hair follicle test and some in the club are now saying, the deal is dead, while others are saying its still on.
Like I said just a story that was told to me.
in todays paper it says he still hasnt had the test
Someone once called me Bastard, I replied "Yes but that was just an accident of birth, with most others its their own choice"

Ben should go to Brisbane away from the spotlight. Here in Victoria, we have half the herald sun dedicated to Ben Cousins and his new haircut.
The Sun are no doubt on a mission to totally ruin this guy.
Ultimately, the conditions are there for Cousins. He either submits to them and plays AFL again, or he does not and he joins the retired list. The option is there for him.
Whether the AFL is right or wrong in taking a hardline approach is debatable. But Ben has no other option.
He has the potential to remind everyone how good he is. If it were me, I'd do anything to prove my value again...if it meant 2 years off drink/drugs and submitting to tests.
At the end of the day, as a recovering drug addict, you have the onus to prove you are off the drugs. So Cousins has to do everything he can to convince everyone he is clean. At the moment he is not.

There's more to life than footy.........just not much more.
