Draft Night? The critique of Hine et al

Post by The Black and White Lion »

We typically go to the national draft and do well with good players coming in pairs. 1988 Russell (1990P) & Francis (1990P), 2005 was Thomas (2010P) & Pendles (2010P & 2023P) were good years for drafting premiership players whilst other years beared 1 or none.

2008 was better with Sidey (2010P & 2023P) & Beams (2010P) + the recycled Leigh Brown (2010P) all tasting glory

In 2014 we took JDG (2023P) & Moore (2023P) + Brayden Maynard (2023P).

2006 was an exception with Reid (2010P) Brown (2010P), Dawes (2010P), Dick and Goldsack (2010P). 2006 was probably our best ever trade and draft given we traded in Medhurst and Bryan plus rookied Sharrod Wellingham (2010P), Brent Macaffer (2010P) and Marty Clark filling up a quarter of our premiership team.

In other years we've been able to take 1 layer from the national draft leading to a premiership (1986 Kelly, 1987 Wright, 1999 Johnson, 2000 Didak, 2001 Swan, 2003 Heath Shaw 2004 T Cloke, 2009 Ball, 2016 Jaicos, 2017 Murphy, 2018 Quaynor, 2021 Naicos with special mentions to 1995 Presti but there's been a few national draft shockers. We've also drafted players who've gone onto premierships elsewhere Paul Williams 89, Josh Mahoney 96, Nick Davis 98 and Rhyce Shaw 99.

Whilst it's too early to tell about the success that might come from the last 2 national drafts, 2022 was trade heavy and already helped win the 2023 premiership.

The draft stats say we have a 40% success rate in converting a national draft into a Pies Premiership player where a total of 26 Pies premiership players have been drafted from 17 national drafts since 1981.

7% of national drafts could be successful if you consider Pies draftees then traded to other teams for premiership success, I'd rather not however.

But the stats also say that our national draft success dips post a premiership with the 5of32years post 1958, 9 years post 1990 (2 players were traded out to premiers elsewhere), and the 4 years post 2010 (note Grundy + injuries). That's 44% of national draft dips post premierships and 53% in total including in betweeners where the cupboard has been bare for Pies Premiership players!

Chances are this year will result in us drafting a future pies premiership as the 22 and 23 drafts are bare so far. If they prove golden well than chances are the 2024 draft will be bare also.
