Short, concise and to the point. 100% correct! What'sinaname wrote:Need to get rid of the high contact rule as the unintended consequence is players throwing their head back to draw a free. Go back to playing a free only when the high contact is severe or significantly impedes a player. Most of the time the incidental contact would not have changed the outcome so the Umpire is having too significant of an influence on the game.
Enjoy yourself. Its later than you think!

I think that much of the problem for the Collingwood talls on Friday night (Cloke, Dawes and - especially when he was forward - Keeffe) was that they were playing on little kids (except for Lake, who is almlost the size of a normal adult defender).
The umpires probably took the view that if they didn't allow a bit more than the usual holding against Collingwood forwards they would be paying frees to them all night. It was plainly outrageous but I think the general interpretation was "you can hold, punch or otherwise interfere with a big gorilla but you can't do any of that to a little guy" - since Footscray have exactly none of the former, they were advantaged by the interpretation.
I look forward to some Collingwood forwards getting soft inside-50 holding frees of the kind that Steve Johnson and Bartel get most weeks. They are both wonderful footballers but they are held inside 50 far less than either Dawes or Cloke.
The hilarious thing, of course, is that Dawes and Cloke are almost always pinged for holding back. Dawes was so distressed by the umpiring that at one stage (I think it was in the first quarter) he actually pitched his mouthguard about 30 yards away in frustration.

Fasolo got 1. Agree on the saints v hawks. Saints getting the same end of the stick we got.Deja Vu wrote:Did any collingwoodfc player get a free for high contact last?
I think our guys need to start ducking for free like everyone else is. Just saw Cyril headbutt someone in the bicep and get a free for high contact
Really hate this trend toward players ducking and getting frees. Didn't like Heater getting one for doing it, hate it when opposition players do it. As soon as a player contributes to the head high contact it should be "play on".

Hargraves actually made contact with the ball in the spoiling motion so no issue with this not being a free. The one not paid to Reid again by Hargraves was definitely a free any day of the week and again resulted in a doggies goal. What'sinaname wrote:The non free to Trav was unbelievable. Dawes was also pushed in the back several times - nothing registered with Sawers' "perceptive fellow". And as for the attempted shirtfront on Trav...
You know you could almost understand Trav wanting to go to GWS or Freo, just because they're not Collingwood so he'd probably get a decent go from the merry whistlers.
He got the ball first but then he got Travis' head from front on. Obvious free. I have no idea what the TV showed but it was very clear from where I was sitting.jackcass wrote:Hargraves actually made contact with the ball in the spoiling motion so no issue with this not being a free. Dont know if this has been mentioned, but in the last quarter, after being manhandled for the umpteenth time, Dawes was so frustrated that I am sure he threw out his mouth guard in disgrace for not receiving a free for being manhandled yet again.
It looked like a good 30 metere throw at the offending doogy player rather than just on the ground.

I'm sure when Fas got the free he said " we have heads too" to the ump!

At least we won, in spite of the umpiring.
How do you reckon the Suns are feeling today:

Someone should shout Demetriou an alarm clock.
