^Best guys were taken pre-draft by GC and Melbourne in Martin and Hogan who would be Top 3 with Boyd if available in the draft. They are the equivalent of O'Meara and Crouch from the year before.

Always going to be at least 10-15 solid players per year, but supposedly this year may fall away after the Top 20 a bit quicker than last year. Elite talent in the top 10 players should still be good in any draft year.
Supposedly this year's draft is also more stacked with midfielders amongst the elite players, rather than talls/KPP's.

From what I read, this is no 'Superdraft' with Hodge, Ball, Judd, Ablett, Swan level of talent.

Given all the raps on Taylor of Geelong Falcons- I would't mind if we picked him at 10 notwithstanding his height (or lack thereof). His reports are simply glowing - sounds like Mitchell of hawthorn with more pace.

If one of he picks is not going to be a big one (in terms of height /KPP etc), then the other option might include Salem. I wouldn't mind a a few more players who can kick it long & kick it where they want it to land: look how devastating Hawthorn can be.

We drafted Ben Kennedy last year a dual AA so I don't think we should use a top 10 pick on another small midfielder like Taylor IMO.

If it was pick 15-20 then I'd be more inclined.

The biggest question for me regarding draft day is if one of Scharenberg, Aish, Billings or Kelly slip to pick 6 do we take them or go for Bontempelli who i do think we legitimately are very keen on (a Hine special like Pendlebury).

Do you take the gamble he'll still be there at 10?

P.S-This is assuming that Hine rates the player who has slipped to sixth and of course Bontempelli is still available.

Seriously, I'd take Bontempelli with pick 1 if we had it. Based solely on the highlights packages I've seen, he's the stand out imho. Still, wtfwik?

Yeah I reckon we should go Bontempelli at 6 regardless of who else is available.

GWS and GC could be the main danger of trumping us with an earlier pick.

I think his potential upside is as high as anyone's (maybe other than Boyd). He is a riskier prospect than the expected top 5 though. Still has some development to go and still to prove he can make it as a permanent midfielder. A good pick at 6 especially when we have 10 to back it up.

for my wtfwik - he looks 'sneaky quick' in close - a bit Pendles and Sam Mitchell'ish

His overhead marking looks strong - rangy long Dustin Fletcher arms - don't forget he is listed as being taller than Koutifides

May be deceptive quick across the ground too
I think therefore I think - I think

^Like you say Bontempelli would certainly be a bit more of a speculative pick than some others but I guess that's what separates the best recruiters from the rest in imaging what they could be like in a few years time and backing your judgement.

Doesn't always turn out for the best but Hine has a good strike rate for later picks and an excellent one for high draft picks so I'm pretty confident in the kid if he deems him worthy of pick 6.

On that note, it still baffles me that we managed to get two dual AA kids last draft given our first pick was 18.

It baffles me even more that we got Grundy, who in hindsight should definitely have gone top 3

A fair few of my mates are very pissed that we have managed to get 6 first rounders (including Adams) in two drafts without even missing finals.

God I love our recruiting department.

^^Grundy looks as if he'll prove to be a massive get. As you say, he seems to be top 3 quality. We were just lucky that rucks were on the nose last year. He could easily have gone 1 or 2 in previous drafts, as he's definitely up there with Kruezer, Fraser, Luenberger etc.

And Kennedy is also rated very highly. Would have gone earlier in the draft if he weren't so short. A similar situation with Taylor in this year's draft, though he's expected to go earlier than 19.

Theory time:

We got rid of Paine in a trade for Karnezis recently, which was a good move from a flexibility standpoint in the seniors. But who will be the tall marking target in the VFL side this year? Most likely Lynch and white will be fighting for the same spot in the seniors, meaning one of them may also be playing VFL. Gault could be moved forward, but frankly, he's lucky to still be listed. We have no true KPF prospect in development now that Paine is gone.

For this reason, I think we will take Bumbumsmelly at 6, and Mcarthy at 10 as a Hine special.
