Ben Reid was pick 8.
And Bucks2014
Your list gives 1 confirmed A grader outside the top dozen picks and that was Beams and 1 A grader rookie in Harry.
Go back in the 10 or so years before Hine and you get many great Pie players selected
As for Ball and Jolly - well both were A graders so it was a no brainer recruiting them.
Go look at Hawthorn and Geelong and Sydney and you will get just as good
or better recruiting.
As for my original thread a while ago
Hine has not recruited a new A grader outside a top pick since the Beams selection.
I stated that Langdon is the next one
And I still believe Hine took over in 2004.
Please it is plain silly to say kids like Freeman are certain A graders.

E there were plenty of great players that Hine could have picked up.
But he didn't.
All recruiters make mistakes and sometimes they get it right.
It is impossible to get most picks right.
I look at Hine over the last decade and I think he has been ok but not exceptional.
As for our current side - I don't think we have a hope in hell of beating
the run and carry and good disposals of the top sides.
And that is another point - Hine has not recruited players who can kick!

Yes sorry thompsoc it's been awhile since Reidy has been on the park, I put Reidys jumper number instead of selection.
Pretty sure Hine took over in 2005 as I thought Judkins was unwell.

It would be good to get a definitive answer on when Hine was recruiting manager.Bucks2014 wrote:Yes sorry thompsoc it's been awhile since Reidy has been on the park, I put Reidys jumper number instead of selection.

The information i had was 2004.
I know Judkins and Hine were working together but who was top dog is a bone of contention.

Up until early 2000s, noel judkins was our sole recruiting officer working seven days a week travelling around the coubtry side. He had a breakdown around this time, supposedly from the workload and the pies chose to set him up to work from home and do all the video reviews while hine was recruited to come in and do the face to face around the country. As Hines role increased, he took over bring the public face of collingwoods recruiting while judkins still did his bit in the background. Thats pretty much how the changeover occurred.
I know Noel reasonably from from years gone by and played a lot of sport with him at Mordialloc. He was a good servant for collingwood for many years and sadly ended in controversy when he supposedly swapped recruiting information with essesndon. I dont know the truth to that story, although i do know that many recruiters swap notes between themselves.

I don't know who you are, but I hope you start posting more often Boot; that is an impressive analysis.Boot wrote:There were some very pleasing aspects from the Brisbane game;
1. We won!
2. Tommy Langdon - Cool and reliable. When the team was running on empty in the last quarter Langdon stood up. Shows great character for a young player
3. Toovey - Brave and can still stop the best forwards in the game. His shirtfront on the Brisbane player was a crunching blow delivered fairly and effectively.
4. Ben Sinclair - I love his run and speed. (So does the coach). Still lacks some disposal skills but is getting better every year.
5. Brody Grundy - His aggression and competitiveness was a driving force early in the game. His second efforts were fantastic. Did very well all night carrying the ruck against two highly rated Brisbane opponents. Hopefully his development will continue for the next five years to hit his best at 25 - 28 years when it appears ruckmen mature to their best.
6. Travis Cloke - Loved to see him running up the ground to release him from the shackles of having two or three defenders hanging off him. Of course this freedom up the ground takes him away of being within striking distance of goal so the likes of Jessie White, Jamie Elliot and Alex Fasolo have to stand up as targets in the forward 50 while Travis is up the ground but I feel Collingwood is a better team with a mobile Cloke running up to the wings then swapping with White to slip back into the goal square every 5 minutes. I would love to see Darcy Moore instead of White for the shared key forward roles when Darcy gets some body development up to AFL level, but that will come when Witts and Grundy can be in the team to share the rucking duties and rest up forward as well.
7. Nathan Brown - looking a reliable full back who should be at his best part of his career. Lets hope his body holds up.

You are absolutely correct Droversdog65..droversdog65 wrote:It would be wonderful if this thread could remain focussed on Langers instead of constant interjections about Hine.
Thommo???
It's getting boring.
I apologise for getting way off track.
I will shutup about Hine but will start another thread about Hine and Judkins
in the future.

Yes they leave nothing to chance. I remember reading that our team noticed that Mason Cox held the door open for a woman as they left a hotel. One boy was apparently discarded after they saw his untidy, shambolic bedroom; guess they were worried about a few other factors too.perthmagpie wrote:Hine played footy for Prahran and then coached them. He came to us in 2003 and worked in welfare and player development. When he arrived Judkins was the national recruitment man. The whole footy dept was restructured in 2005. Judkins was demoted and Hine promoted. I think from memory the recruitment of Egan was a Judkins and Malthouse choice. Chris Egan came from Rumbulara and there were question marks on his commitment.
The thing is the gift with recruitment is not just spotting the talent but estimating if the player will fulfil that talent. Once the name is called out the player is in charge of his destiny and the recruiter moves on hoping he was a good judge of a young man's character. I have heard Hine speak of how he analyses that intangible quality. You gotta say he has great intuition for reading the level of a players long term levels of dedication to improve his game.

Great move Thommo it is an interesting subject and the overall concept of lionizing certain figures has always been a weakness at the club.thompsoc wrote:You are absolutely correct Droversdog65..droversdog65 wrote:It would be wonderful if this thread could remain focussed on Langers instead of constant interjections about Hine.

Just trying to point out a few facts for you there 'thompsoc', but can we get back to Langdon? I watched the game again yesterday and his last quarter was remarkable. He must have been tired like the rest of the boys, but he bobbed up everywhere because he reads the play so well. How many times in the last quarter did he thwart a Brisbane attacking move? Plenty is the answer. Intercept marking, spoiling, handball receives, he did it all in the last.thompsoc wrote:Wow Neil I didn't notice we were recruiting a team of saints!
I find that story remarkable. I want footballers not saints and angels.
He wasn't the only player to stand up either. Toovey played a very consistent game, full of aggression and leadership. Marley was in every pack too. Wish he could actually kick, but there's no doubting his pluck. And finally, the Whipping Boy of Nick's Bulletin Board, Taylor Adams; this young man sacrificed for the team all night. He was at the bottom of every pack, scrapping and smothering and getting the ball out; there was nothing flash about his work, but it was all from the Luke Ball School. He conducted himself well in interviews after the game (yes, he does owe us a good year after his summer of discontent in Geelong) and he cuts a mighty fine figure in the away strip don't you think?
