Free WiFi and call through Facebook when I needed to in the USA.luvdids wrote:What's the best option for communication when overseas for 5 weeks? Buy an overseas phone/sim? Or buy one of those 'travel package' things from Telstra or Post Office etc. I would prefer to have my own number while away but not interested in a $2000+ bill to come home to.
The Telstra one that would suit the length of time I'm away is $250, not sure of any others.
Any suggestions most appreciated

We have always just taken one phone and activated global roaming ( with Telstra) for calls and texts and deactivated data - that way we have the same number can make the occasional call and send and receive texts without great expense ( actually very little expense ) even when we have been away for months.luvdids wrote:What's the best option for communication when overseas for 5 weeks? We utilise free wifi for emails web etc and when in countries - especially Africa where there is limited Wifi, we buy a local sim for the iPad and net access USB for the laptop - pretty cheap as well.

im with aldi, which works on telstra lines, but doesnt have international roaming (i just checked!)
hubby has optus, calls in or out are $1 a minute, with the amount of calls he gets that can get pricey, but its mostly business calls so claimable. SMS is only 50c and free to receive. i will activate roaming before we leave and just use his phone.
however, i will take my phone and use WhatsApp Wechat viber to talk via wifi from the hotel etc. and as someone said facebook messenger is good.
the only person i really want contact available with 24/7 is the daughter who is staying home, so She will call hubbies phone.
when we went to Hawaii i bought the aust post sim, but it was bloody awful. never worked properly.
in the USA last time, we just bought a $30 prepaid with credit and used it for local calls. i think i still have it somewhere, if i can find it i'll take that and buy a sim.
$250 for 5 weeks, $50 a week, if you are travelling with someone and share, thats cheap, if travelling alone, its still cheap; on your own in another country, peace of mind of a familiar system, for 50 bucks is dirt cheap.
You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either!

Ok, naked pictures via email it is then!luvdids wrote:thanks for the tips everyone.
Mobile's with Telstra, might take their package, although it didn't quite cover the whole trip. Or might do as 5150 suggested, don't use it, just to upload to FB & check emails etc when I'm at the hotel. I'm not going to miss the heavy breathing!

^ Great story. We might not hear much about it, but there is a progressive movement happening in Iran. The Ayatollah and his fellow patriarchs are slowly but surely losing their grip on their country's throat.

Give it another year or 2 and the fundamentalists will put their attention back onto Iran and **** that up again too. No chance they'll let this progressive stuff go unchallenged for too long.Morrigu wrote:^ yeah Turkey is in for a bleak time!
I reckon give it another year or two and Africa via Iran might be the go - Iran looks amazing
