^ They should have suspended flights a week ago. Better late than never I suppose...

Raina MacIntyre, head of the Biosecurity Research Program at the Kirby Institute, UNSW Medicine, (sort of) says

"Staying in Wuhan more risky than 14 days on Christmas Island".

 It shows what everyone thinks about Christmas Island if they feel they need to write this stuff.

Some interesting bits:

"Quarantine has been used throughout history, including in Europe during the black plague, because it works. ... We even have a longstanding Federal Quarantine Act...

We had a Quarantine Station in Sydney until 1984, which quarantined ships during the 1918 flu pandemic."

What the US did:

Inside the California Military Base a Coronavirus Evacuee Tried to Flee

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/30/us/c ... cuate.html

"This makeshift community on a military base in Riverside, Calif., is made up of evacuees from Wuhan, the city in China that is the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak. The 195 people, including diplomats, infants, a football player and a theme-park designer, are among Americans who have managed to leave Wuhan since a quarantine was imposed.
...

From his room at an inn on the military base, Mr. McCoy said, “It’s not Club Med, but we’re fortunate to be here. I try to stay busy with my work, social media and my hotel workout regimen.” The Spanish-style hotel, which boasts stucco archways and a large courtyard, faces a verdant lawn.
...

When he heard of a flight out of the country, he quickly filled out the online forms. An email from the United States Embassy in Beijing arrived, which read: “Space on this flight is extremely limited and we respectfully request that you not share details regarding the flight, including on social media.”

Mr. Evans learned that he was No. 171 on a flight that could accommodate about 200, he said. “I felt very lucky to be chosen out of all U.S. residents in Wuhan,” he said. Some Americans reported that they had tried to get a seat on the flight but were told there was no room."

Even though outside China, it was still a Chinese man.

Still hasn't killed anyone who isn't Chinese.
Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down.

I've stopped caring. People's confirmation bias will make anything I write or say into what they want/expect it to be anyway.

It looks like there is a total of 178 reported cases outside China (many of them actually Chinese people who contracted the disease in Wuhan). The early indications are that the death rate is about 1 in 50, so it’s not surprising that there’s only been the one death outside China - you might anticipate 3 or 4 at most from that sample (although the sample is so small that it wouldn’t be unusual for there to be no further deaths amongst them). A clearer picture would emerge if the overseas outbreaks can’t be contained.

Interesting tactics from China.
In China, according to the NHC guidelines issued Saturday, if a coronavirus victims dies, the following measures are to be taken as quickly as possible.

First, the medical staff at the medical facility where the person was being treated are required to disinfect and seal the remains. It is forbidden to open the remains once they have been sealed. Second, the medical staff will issue a death certificate and notify the family. At this point, the local funeral services facility will be contacted. Third, funeral services personnel will then collect the body, deliver it to the relevant facility, and directly cremate the remains. A cremation certificate will then be issued.

No one is permitted to visit the remains during this process. Relatives will, however, be allowed to take the remains after cremation has been completed and documented, the NHC explained in its Saturday announcement.

If you were trying to cover something up, you'd want to make sure there were no autopsies and no bodies that could be exhumed later.

We had Chinese customers in at work on Saturday, didn't speak English so were dealing with the Chinese salesperson. They (husband & wife) told him they'd been in Aus for over a month. He then overheard them talking to their friend, telling him that the wife was in the Wuhan area when the virus first appeared so the husband told her to get on a train to Beijing & a plane to Aus. Much hand sanitiser used after they left!

It's also becoming a standard question - had to book an eye test at OPSM, their booking questions? Name, address, any vision issues, have you been to China in the last 2 weeks?

Hopefully the researchers come up with something soon.
