Delistings

Post by El Popo »

A couple of questions for the gurus
Do we need to take 3 in the draft or is it 2 and upgrade a rookie.
Did we put Greenwood on the injury list and take Johnson as a rookie, meaning we have already replaced one delisting ?

Bearing the two questions above, and hoping we take 2-3 in the trade period, how many more do we need to delist to meet the following -
Primary lists must have between 36 and 38 players. Category A rookies are capped at 4-6, up to a total of 42 players on a list including primary-listed players. Each club can also have two Category B rookies.

They’re all good questions and it’s a can of worms from one year to the next.
One of the issues that muddy the waters, is that particular categories have less impact on the salary cap than others. By example, I believe Ginnivan, who just got an extension is best served as remaining as a rookie, cap wise, rather than being added to the senior list ( happy to be corrected if others know better )
I’m also of the belief, there is the minimum requirement of three selections per club on the primary list this year ( again, happy to be corrected )
Anything beyond that, I’m just going to sit back and let it play out on the night.

Only one free agent (Tomlinson) between the two Grand Finalists over the last 5 years.

Wells Mayne etc was the wrong play, we hamstrung Hine at the draft and bought into debt for players that weren't going to put us over the top or be part of a sustained window

Weideman is now gone and we're not in the race for Cerra or any other "big stars". Would love to trade for pick 1 or Ben King, but that's not going to happen, so...

Trade for Krueger and Lipinski. It seems we've let it be known that these are our main targets. Lets get them and lets hopefully get the trades done fast. I dont want to be waiting until 4:59pm on the final day of trade week. I dont think we'll look to Riccardi and it seems Silvagni will stay with Carlton too. I've heard worse ideas that trading for Dow as a replacement for Sier, but some may see that as a like-for-like in a bad way.

Geelong have some moves to make, Narkle has stayed and we'll see what happens with Jordan Clark going to WA and Krueger getting to Collingwood. But should we ask about Charlie Constable too? A tall inside mid thats good for a few goals a year as well. Looking at the Crows, are they offloading Seedsman? He is 29, but also made the AA squad of 40. I dont think he'd be a high priority, but if he wants to come home and its a cheap trade, then go for it.

Two other players I want to talk about are Rory Lobb and Jarrod Brander. Depending on Krueger, should we talk to these players as well? Lobb isn't a bad addition and we are desperate for someone, someone tall, to clunk marks and kick goals, Lobb can do that as well as ruck. And he wants to leave Freo. Brander is also on the way out of his club and could easily fit into our plans.

Free agency singing targets have dried up. I think Mitch Wallis would not be a bad addition. He missed the 2016 flag because of injury and he's missing out today. He'd be in a weird place, but if he wants to leave the Dogs, then we should approach him. Kinda annoyed that Jake Kelly is going to sign with Essendon, but if there's any way we can change his mind then that'd be great.

A DFA signing could include Naish. I'd be fine with that. Has been noted for his running ability and his kicking skills. Luke Dunstan is another that will get picked up somewhere. I think he's a big upgrade on Sier as a contested ball winner, and we definitely need help there. Tom Lynch could be spoken to if we fail to land another KPF.

Draft Nick Daicos, Dib and best available at remaining picks (with KPP in mind). Rookie draft Stengle at pick 2 if he has gone unsigned and is available. Not sure of the situation with Connor McKenna and if he seriously wants to return to AFL. If he goes into the ND or RD, we should jump.

We also have our Pre-Season Draft Pick to think about. That could be used on an unsigned player that we couldnt trade for.

You have mentioned about 15 players for us to grab

The absolute limit would be:

Mayne Greenwood Sier Cox Lynch Thomas Tohill*

Tohill was a Cat B so perhaps you can swap Keane from Cat A to B to create a place while we work out if Faye is a goer or not, so 6 or 7 players depending on that

There are whispers Sier and Cox might stay now so I reckon it's more like 5 or 6 players on

Any senior player (over 25) who isn't in the starting 22 is prime for delisting or trading.

Exception being Lynch or Cameron who have a role as backup.

Mason COX - 99% Gonsky
Brayden SIER - 90%
Josh THOMAS - 70%
Will HOSKIN-ELLIOTT - 20%
Jack MADGEN - 10%

* Lynch - 70%

Without rigorous thought :

If we bring in Lipinski and the German, Nick Daicos and 2 others, that's 5.

Greenwood , Mayne gone. Just on the numbers, 3 of the names I've listed are out.

But then, have they increased list sizes ?

Well if Cox and Lynch are BOTH going, then I suggest one of the “ ins “ should be a back up ruckman.

Correct on paper.

But neither has really been used as a Ruckman. If they are not first dibs when required, what have we lost ? They are off the list IMO.

Lynch is only 23, so the Jury is out. Only those in the know would truly know if he has scope. We have NFI.

Cameron is backup, Begg mooted Ruckman. Unless there is a standout, we are not desperate. Perhaps a makeshift is better than a B grader.

Having said that, it's Grundy who can bring in 2.5 first rounders for 2022. The Ruck situation could be interesting

I would hate to see Grundy or Cameron get injured. I would keep Lynch or Cox but not trade both.

Same here. Prefer to move Cox on and keep Lynch.

Hypothetically, would it be a win-win situation if we considered a trade involving Grundy to the Bulldogs and for us to receive something back that included Ugle-hagan?

We then develop Max Lynch and have some serious key forward potential for the future.

Dogs would surely be favourites next year with Grundy in their team.
