Cam wrote:Ginnivan's game against Geelong was top shelf. Pivotal. Playing 2 quarters in a month is not the ideal prep for a GF. The kids has xfactor about him but he is a very very good set shot for goal. He will forever rue trying to snap that one in the GF. Great set shot kicks have been few and far between during the last 20 years at our club.
No argument for any of that however he has to learn to deal with his life outside the club.
Smart rrrsed acts like the jockey silks wear very quickly, he may be only 20 but he has 2 years in the system to learn that playing for Collingwood is a like living in a gold fish bowl - there is nowhere to hide and the media is merciless.
His performance in the GF is irrelevant either way - he has a god given talent and to realize his potential he needs to focus.
Hopefully Fly and Jacqui can guide him.

Here its my two bob's worth on Ginnivan:
a) going nowhere in this Trade Period (or the next five or six)
b) needs to work on his core strength to 'stick' more tackles (Quaynor would be a great role model to follow in this respect)
c) needs to work on both his running ability (both speed and endurance)- both can be improved provided the individual is 100% dedicated to the achievement of both.
d) as mentioned by others, needs to latch onto others who are elite trainers: Mitchell, Crisp, Sidebottom, Daicos Brothers, Pendlebury and quickly learn how to be the best by giving of his best.
Ginnivan has an innate ability to read the play and get into scoring opportunities, or set up opportunities for others- this is a skill that few possess (I think of players like Peter Daicos, Alan Didak, Medhurst, Leon Davis, Andy Krakouer as Pies who had this 'gift'...
I love the energy that Ginnivan brings to his game- it is infectious for the crowd and must lift his teammates.
Looking forward to many more years of the joy he creates for the Black and White Army...

Totally disagree. He is an individual who is comfortable in his own skin and has the Country lad lackadaisical style that suits him. As a 20 year old he has time to dry the wet behind the ears attitude and “mature” according to what society dictates. I suspect very much that most journos, fans, Nicksters who criticise him are either blatant hypocrites or were appeases. I cannot with any self honesty say that I didn’t act or do similar non conformist activities at that age. Ginny is being himself, a rare commodity in the systematic life of unrealistic expectations put on such people. Just get off his back and let him flourish in his own ways. I support him 100% and hope he remains at Collingwood in spite of the nonsensical hysteria generated by fools.

None of us are perfect - me less so than most - but Ginni has the opportunity to be more than most of us get the chance to.
I hope he is mature enough to grasp it.

I always get a little annoyed when people get frustrated at an athlete “because they’re squandering their potential”. I think it speaks to envy. “if I had what you had I would treat it seriously and make the most of it”. Who cares! It’s the end of the day everyone leads to live their own life and we all will reap what we sow. If Ginni (or Jordy - let’s face it he has faced the same criticism) want to piss their talent away then that’s their call and at some point the club will form a view on that.
Point is, none of us know what it is like to be anyone other than who we are.

And I always get annoyed when people use the excuse of youth and high spirits.

Fair comment. Not sure I’m accepting the excuse “they’re only kids” - just that at the end of the day it’s on them and not you or I.
Factually though all the players taken in the draft are still kids really. You can’t take an 18-19 year old and say ok, yesterday you were a kid, but today you’re in an important position and the world expects more of you. Well, you can, but fair chance the directive won’t be understood nor delivered immediately. Some are quicker than others to understand their opportunity and some never do, but at the end of the day wether they do or don’t is a function of their actions and the degree of forgiveness provided by the footy club along the way.

Look I said it in his first season - I love the kid - but AFL football is a rough business and the the longer you take to solidify a spot the more at risk you are.
It comes down to hard work and focus. Nobody expects a first year kid not to stuff up and he spent most of this season in the magoos for misbehavior off field. Yet as soon as he gets back in the squad he leaves himself wide open not once but twice.
Nothing wrong with going to the ponies surely he could work out that doing it on GF eve was going to be splashed all over the media.
And as for for the jockey silks that's simply waving a red rag at a bull or giving it the finger.
I have no problem with Ginni but he's in need of some guidence.
