New chat room and contact facility

Post by Mike »

We have upgraded the chat facility. The new system, as well as running and looking better, allows you to register your nicks, have your own rooms, have one on one chats as well as group chats and lots more.

It would be a good idea to register your name asap before someone else takes a liking to it. If there is any dispute, the person with a name already registered on the bb will always have the first claim on that name on the chat server. To register your name in chat, enter the chat room and click the first button on the left at the top and then edit your profile - that will give you the opportunity to enter your password and register the name.

There are two public rooms: PiesChat and Live Scoreboard - everyone has free access to these rooms.

Setting up a private chat room is the same as setting up a private forum. If you'd like a private room for your group, email me with the name of the room and a password. Room owners can then give the password to the people they choose as members and only the people with the password will be able to enter the room.

The chat server is being run from our own web server which makes us independant of 3rd parties, but until I get the funds to upgrade, it may be a little slow. In order to get the software for free I have had to put aside my hatred of advertising, so there are banners running at the top - you'll get used to them and won't even notice them after a while.

There is also a new facility for contacting Nick or me. Just click the link at the bottom of the bb front page and if either of us is online, not necessarily on the site, a small chat will open and there one of us will be - Joffa's already been making good use of this and has also taken the chat room for a trial run. If anyone would like to volunteer as a live support person and help Nick and me out a bit (CJ?) yell out and I'll add you to the list.

That's about it - oh yeah footy tipping software is coming along nicely.

The new chat server is proving to be a bit temperamental, so I've taken it down and put the old one back up until we can get it to operate a little more reliably.
