It's a Physical Year

Post by Scottie Davo »

After watching the first round of the Ansett Cup last weekend, there is one thing that has stuck in my mind more so than in past years.

The attack on the football has been far more ferocious than I can remember.

Have a look at the results from attacking the footy...all winners had a highlight package where someone went at the ball. Port's goal against the cheats was testimony to that. Tarrant's mark, Licuria's ill-fated desperation, and the fever of the West Coast all-in (love it when little man Matera impersonates a javelin), all prove that muscle rather than brain will win the matches this year.

We must adapt to this fast. You'll see how turnovers were made by the fancy attempts at showing the ball or not having your body close to your hands when in the thick of it.

If the Pies can concentrate on that ball for the four quarters, and, dare I say it again this year, bloody well kick straight (I threw a tantrum when we missed set shots that guys getting paid this much simply shouldn't miss...)then a more consistent performance may occur.

Let's win this pre-season comp, and put some opposition players down for the count while we are at it...

I know it sounds a little simplistic, but I swear to all who will listen...if we continually attack that ball, the opportunities and the wins will come. After Round 5 last year we expected the ball to come to us. And the result is well known.

We will make the finals, regardless of injuries, if our head is down.
