What is the obsession with Quick Midfielders??
I know u need a structured team balance, and obviously need pace etc...
But having the most blistering midfield in the league doesnt achieve anything. Brisbanes midfield quartet-or-quintet lack bursting pace, apart from Aker. Black, Power, Voss, Lappin, Scott brothers, Caracella are all medium paced midfielders, BUT THEY RUN HARD!!!!
Same with port, Roger James, Carr, Kingsley exception Burgoyne, Hardwick etc all not lightning quick, but strong over the ball and good in close. And they are able to be in an under and running players.
We were desperate for NIck Stevens, but he is not a QUICK outside midfielder. I think quality is most important, if we as a club were in such need of a quick outside midfielder, i think youd find Rhyce Shaw would have been played more consistently with Cole and BJ further up the ground.

I reckon we need an in and under player, not an outside midfielder, but anyway, I'd still like him to be quick - Davis and Shaw are the only midfielders we have who could be described as quick, and they're not exactly quality yet, shaw probably wont be. hope hs brother can step up a bit next year.

Dids is slow, not quick.
The problems with our midfield this year were, largely, that whilst we were reasonable at winning the hardball a times, we were pathetic with our skills and in particular at moving the ball forward with precision and skill.
Slow in terms of leg speed, slow in terms of giving it off and pathetic when it came to hitting targets and going direct.

What we need are midfielders that can find a little bit of space then HAVE good SKILLS to be able to deliver the ball correctly.
We do not need fast midfielders in terms of pace as the ball can always move fasther than someone running with the ball.
Speed is required in terms making the correct decision and then executing correctly.
Imagine if MCG, OB and Lica could execute by foot like Black or Lappin - we would have won 2 flags.
The Pies problems are off field - skills, strength and conditioning coaches.
The list is NOT the problem.
We have the right ingredients we DO NOT have the right chefs.

Just imagine if talent scouts of years gone by had stuck with the 'must be quick' formula.
Just think of the names that might never have played - Peter Daicos, Greg Williams, Anthony Stevens, Neville Fields.... the list goes on.
What do these guys have in spades though? An ability to get the ball and, more importantly, find the space upfield and deliver it there to a teammate's advantage.
Give me six midfielders who can do that anyday!

Explain it to me like I'm a four year old. Ted Whitten is an AFL legend, and Bob Rose isn't?
