Mike Sheahan - tall poppie syndrome?
OK, I've never met Mike Sheahan, but from the other side ofthe TV he comes across as a bit of an arrogant person, and since he named Buckley 10th best in the league, along with the other things he says about the Pies, I haven't developed a great respect for the man. But this is just laughable. Mike has come out in defence of the AFL regarding Eddie's comments.
He reports this in such a biased manner, criticising Eddie for lableing the AFL "cheats", but also takes the time to throw in a couple of personal assults.
Now cheats is a pretty strong word, but for so long now the AFL have walked all over whom ever they wanted too, the ONLY way to get any compromise out of them has been to publically confront them. And this is what Eddie has done. And it's not just him, it's the other 13 "southern" clubs as well!

McGuire in hot water

EDDIE McGuire will be censured and can expect to be sanctioned over the extraordinary ''cheating'' charge he levelled at the AFL on Thursday.
The Collingwood president will learn as soon as Monday just how much he has angered league officials when his club meets the commission for the annual update.
McGuire, who has been spoiling for a stoush with the AFL for a while**, finally has backed the commission into a corner from which it can escape only by trading blows.
Angered by what he sees as preferential treatment for Sydney and Brisbane, he said: ''The AFL are blatantly cheating against the rest of the competition, and we are getting sick of them.''
AFL chief executive Wayne Jackson said last night: ''I just think, on the eve of the Grand Final, I'm much more interested in the focus being on Brisbane and Essendon.''
In a measured response in which the anger was only thinly veiled, he added: ''Eddie's in the unique position of having a vehicle (The Footy Show) to express his views when he wants to.
''Regretfully, sometimes mine have to be much more considered and responsible.''
Jackson declined to say what he or commission chairman Ron Evans planned to say to McGuire on Monday, but rest assured it will be more than than small talk about Grand Final day.
McGuire is in hot water. His outburst undermines the integrity and credibility of the people in charge of the competition.
Calling them cheats is, in my view, far more serious than, say, a coach making a gesture towards an opposition player, suggesting the player had cut his own throat by one of his actions during a game.
It was a gesture that cost Kevin Sheedy $7500, and public humiliation.
Sheedy was guilty of nothing more than gamesmanship; McGuire has attacked the good name of the commission and the commissioners, and football operations manager Andrew Demetriou.
Yes, you may argue that the commission has gone too far with its draft concessions for the northern clubs, but a public ''cheats'' claim against the governing body is way out of line.
Jackson left club general managers in no doubt yesterday he and the commissioners were not amused by the McGuire outburst.
McGuire has threatened to go to the United Nations, one of the few organisations he doesn't run,** in search of justice on this one, but, if he has right on his side, he should work with those of like mind. In private.
Who else could score a headline for a political story on Grand Final eve?**
------------------------------------
** denotes times when Mike has swayed off the reporting track and onto the personal attack on a genuinly nice Collingwood man track. Unneseccary, especially considering the biased vein in which he has reported the information.
For my mind Mike is talking out his proverbial you-know-what (as usual) and is just dissapointed HE was never as sucessful as our President. It annoys me that he uses his position to do exactly what he has critisized Eddie for doing!
And that's my two cents.... thankyou for listening..

the AFL have always acted like dictators. now that they're being challenged, they don't like it. I sometimes cringe at the things eddie says on the footy show, but I agree with him 100% on this one. these concessions are a bloody disgrace!! how the hell does the AFL justify this when there are melbourne clubs who are already suffering financially and on the field? esp. when one of the clubs, brisbane, already has the 2001 brownlow medallist and will be playing off in the GF! as for sydney, although not all of their star players were recruited from concessions, i.e. lockett, they have nevertheless had plenty of opportunities to be successful. fair enough, develop the market in NSW and QLD, but surely there are better ways to achieve this.
no one spoke out when the west coast got all those concessions and look what happened - 2 bloody premierships. I'm glad that eddie and the other presidents have spoken out this time. mike sheehan can go get f**ked.

Exactamundo Alf.
I would assume he would be tousering a bit of moolah for having his diatribe featured on the AFL site, as you so astutely noted Joffa.
Although I'm not suggesting this is the case in this particular instance, it's known that journos are often slipped a bit of cash to write stories in a more favourable light, a la John Laws etc a tear or so ago. It has happenend in football before. Does make you think, doesnt it?

Sheahan relies on the AFL for his living. He needs to be "onside" with the powerbrockers to break stories. This means he will always side with his moneymakers.
Why the hell did Eddie employ him at 9???
Also, didn't he work for the AFL years ago? Wasn't he in fact their Media officer? No wonder he knows how to twist the facts to look after the lord and masters. A real "spin doctor"

BEWARE - LONG OPINIONATED POST!
Mike Sheean is an ex AFL employee. He has long been a Collingwood critic. Frankly a lot of his criticisms in the early 90's were justified in content because until Eddie came along we were pathetic off the field and ordinary on the field as a result.
He has shown, though, that he has something against the pies by the frequency of his critisism and continuation onto polital issues now that administative and playing matters are dramatically improved. He is out of his depth because he has a simple mind and must draw from what he is told things mean rather than analysing for himself (my opinion).
In the end, does anyone take any notice of Mike Sheean?
If we want to address the subject matter of what he says, ARE THE AFL ARE CHEATS?
No question in my mind that they set agendas and do what it takes to achieve their goals. That is nothing more than is done in business. Where the prolems arise, however, is from the self rightous finger pointing at clubs who try and do the same. Add to that their disregard for the fact that Collingwood or Melbourne, for instance, are at least as much a part of THE AFL as Brisbane, Sydney or North Melbourne and you get all the critisism that they get from within clubs. Look at the concessions given tol Freeo when Melbourne got White. Did Fitzroy get anything when they were raped by clubs over the salary cap? I won't dwell on individual cases because this will go on forever.
Then add the contempt they seem to show for supporters and you get an organisation that does not represent it's stake holders, is secretive and underhanded and takes stances against individuals rather than act on principles.
Does this make them cheats? I'm not sure.
Does it matter what word is used - not to me!

On The Sunday Footy Show today, Dwayne Russell brought up the issue of Leigh Matthews' contract being subsidised by the AFL. Guess who was quick to dismiss it as a rumour? Yep, you guessed it, Mr Mike Sheahan, the AFL's little lap-dog. I don't think Mr Sheahan can ever again say that Eddie has a conflict of interest.

Leigh Mathews salary ins't subsidised by the AFL - but channel 7 pay 130 000 dollars of the 300 000 a year contract. So basically it's the same thing. If anyone other than the AFL (politicians, buisiness men,) were to organise such a dodgy deal they would be shot down. Anyone heared about conflict of interest?
But what makes this really interesing is, what will happen next year? When Channel 7 isn't doing anything with footy? Will Leigh move back to Victoria, I can't see him staying for 170 000 a year after winning the Premiership! No, the AFL will just pay the extra, methinks.

from what I have heard, next year channel 7 will continue to sponsor the swans - so even though they don't have the same role with footy as they have had for the last 45 years. So I can see that if they are still sponsoring the swannneees that 7 may continue to pay Leigh Mathews $130,000 (if that's what they have been doing).

Don't ask yourself what the club needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and go do that, because what Collingwood needs right now is people who have come alive.
