No matter how you look at it we had a successful trading period last year. The first in a long time I might add. The Molloy/Michael was not break even. I agree we need a tall defender but Mal wanted to leave. It was his decision and once made had to be worked with.
Molloy was not taken because he was a forward or bvecause he filled a position. Mooloy was taken because he played a style of game we despirately needed. We were a young, light, skillfull side with few players capable of laying an effectice tackle let alone a solid bump. Molloy added what we needed most - agression and physical presence.
Now we have other more pressing needs which have been well documented. The challange now is to address them.

The reason we may not get black is because freo want what we dont want to give.
Would you give them josh or tarrant for black rohan?
thats what they want.
We offered them Rupe and they laughed at us@!
We dont need Black as much as we need a defender and a ruckman .Do you really barrack for us,or are you just a very bitter young boy.?
Every time you go near the typewriter out comes vitriol about the staff at the club.
If we get Black on our terms well and good, but sometimes the terms are too high.

Rohan, you disappoint me very much. Do you like to constantly say something bad about the club? I think your reasons for posting on the bulletin boards is to get all Collingwood supporters worked up.
Before I go on to make some valid points, just in case you can't remember we live in Australia not America so maximise is spelt like that and not how you chose to spell it like maximize. I suppose the St Kevins education explains that.
Have you ever thought that the club doesn't want Heath Black. An don't tell me they should want him either. Maybe there is another midfielder that wants to leave their club that the media doesn't know of and Collingwood is after him.
To say that Steinfort has no skill and is an average player is not giving him the credit he deserves. He got an ankle injury very early on in the season that deterred him from playing to his best all year. He did tag some very good players out of games for us in 2001. Clement, Holland and Rintoul are and will be top players for the club for the next 5 years. You cannot comapre them to McPhee becausue he is an 18 year old and Collingwood wasn't looking for a young player, rather they were looking for more expereinced players. So 2 clubs with 2 different needs no comparison can be done.
So don't start saying that the recruiting staff need to have a look at themselves because there is so much information that we don't know about. I don't see you in the high ranks of an AFL club so have some substance to your agruments.
If you think that your negative posts have any bearing on the club, or people at the club then you are wrong, they don't care what you say. To them you are a low class supporter who bags like hell then jumps on the bandwagon when all is well.
Grow up and try and post a topic that you haven't done to death!!!!

It will be interesting to see what St Kilda offer him. Ed said we would have to give away a Fraser or Davis (overrating his value a tad) to get him.
St Kilda has an inferior list to ours, so how will they get Black? Have they got more trade bait than us? I don't think so (remember their priority picks can't be traded).
How can St Kilda have Hamill, Everitt, Gehrig or Harvey on contracts over 500 thousand yet still attract Black? We have one (Buckley) and can't attract anyone.

What St.Kilda have is early draft pics. That is VERY valuable currency. With 3 of the top 4 pics Freeo could secure just about any player they wanted and still get a gun youngster.
Rohan, I am not as critical of your post as some on here because by and large our recruiting in the past 10 years has been absolutely pathetic. In fact, the club and those involved have got off lightly even with the critisism they have copped.
The past 4 National Drafts have been ok but not great, given the opportunities presented by our ladder positions. The pre draft trading was still poor.
Last year, however, was good. We targeted certain types of players and got what we needed. Gehrig would have been good and I was dissapointed we missed out. In the end, if the seller won't sell to you, what can you do? I am glad we didn't enter a bidding war which would have cost us someone neccessary to our future. WCE wanted Tarrant.
Now we come to this year and only time will tell how the recruiters perform. I hope they get Balck but I hope we don't loose some better. History is not on our side but recent history gives me cause for optimism.

A couple of points:
- Adam McPhee is a player we effectively traded Clement and Holland for. He won a Ansett Rising Star Nomination this year.
- Rintoul is a short-term option. To say he has 5 years ahead of him is laughable.
- Steinfort has poor foot disposal. Injured or not he is an average player. He was basically delisted/shown the door from an average side in Geelong. Salary Cap restrictions pushed him out.
- I might be incorrect but there is an AFL rule that you can't trade priority picks (i.e. St Kilda). This makes St Kilda trade bait of less worth.
- Every year a club must trade to bolster its list. A good example of not trading and suffering as result is Melbourne last year. The competition improves each year and not trading is fraught with danger.
- Last year St Kilda obtained Koschitzke, Riewoldt (future champions), Gehrig (a tall defender we need the most, Judkins has said that) and Hamill. To say Collingwood's effort is far better is off the mark. They had a similar list and only one more draft pick.

Rohan, they were 2nd last we were 9th. While 9th is nothing to brag about we were pretty level last year and we passed them this year. I wouls suggest due to the relative performance of recruits of the last year and maybe the year b4 that. That is objective evidence not opinion. Some will the Saints had injuries but they were gone before Harvey, Bourke & Lowe went down.
I agree about Rintoul & Steinfort but the point is they weere recruited for their syle and experiance, not thier individual match winning ability.
Re the trade rule - I think you are right but they still have thier actual No.1 pick which is no 4 overall.
As an aside, I thought MM's comment on talking footy was interesting. He "complained" about rewarding mediocraty with priority draft pics. Even though we benefited, I agree with him.

Totally the opposite Jeff. I want to see the club attract quality like Black, Porter etc.
I am sick of dimmy dazzlers while povo clubs with inferior lists out trade us.
I thought we agreed not to respond to each other Magpie Greg?

This subject has been gone over a few times on this board, but it is worth talking about.
Like Rohan, I feel disappointed that we didn't get Gehrig-he is a very good player and just what we need. I wouldn't mind getting Black, we have a few on-ballers but he looks a quality player at this stage. The combination of St Kilda's draft position and irresponsible spending make it hard to compete with them. They don't seem to have a plan at the moment-they're just grabbing every big name available.
The difference between them and Collingwood is we have a plan. Our President, recruiters and Coach all seem to be working together for a long term outcome (a bit like training up Rogan Josh to win the Melbourne Cup instead of plonking your dough on Vintage Crop again cos he won it before). Clement and Molloy played many good games this year-Steinfort and Rintoul played well before injuries took their toll. If nothing else these players provide "cover" for the development of undoubted prospects like the Davises (or is the plural of Davis Davii?), Didak etc.
I reckon we would have made the finals this year with Gehrig in the team, but thats just wishful thinking. What really happened was we steadily improved and the Saints self-destructed again. I have confidence in our club-they have a plan. I don't want us to be like the Saints-that means we can't compete with them for big names. I'm very happy with the little names we've got, and hope for more.
