What happened to Eddie's promise?

Post by Magpie Mark »

I am not knocking the club's decision not to trade but has everyone forgotten Eddie's promise around the time he was elected that Collingwood would attmept to entice every big name to the club when they became available?

Did this promise go out the window when we missed out on Lloyd and Colbert a few years back?

I cannot believe that we have not made 1 high profile trade. If this club thinks the list of players we have will take it to a flag within the next couple of years, they are absolutely kidding themselves.

Bucks will turn 30 next season, and if not for his loyalty to the club, would be well within his rights to tell MM and Eddie to stick it. Really, we almost over achieved finishing 9th, and although some of our young guys have gotten older and more mature, some of our older guys have gotten older and slower.

Eddie would really need to take a good hard look at what has just happened.

Don't forget that one of the players we are banking on to take us further has come out and said he wants to be traded to Sydney. What stops him next year walking out?

We have screwed that many trades in the past, maybe the footy dept figured it was better not too trade and stuff it up, than trade and risk another "dud for talent" trade that we seem to be on the wrong side of.

I am ABSOLUTELY dispondant. Where is this club going?

According to MM earlier this week, we apparently agreed to a trade then the other club pulled out. Who knows, maybe it was a case of the big one that got away. I'm sure they tried.

i agree legga, how many times do we make the same old mistakes, can't the club ever learn?

Enticing the player is one thing...pleasing the club that has a hold on the player is another.

Colbert isnt the same player since he did his knee and has been injured more often than not since moving across to North.

Lloyd, Essendon would never part with him and he wouldnt leave.

Everitt would have been the big catch but it seems St Kilda wanted what we werent willing to give up. Remembering that he is still under contract and no chance of him departing via the preseason draft for nothing.

Don't be surprised if we get Everit in two years, he was pretty keen to come. I don't think we did too bad not trading, we don't need Black or Misiti, another tall back and another ruck would've been nice, but there weren't many tall backs available, and I belive we did the right thing not disrupting our list just to get a big name like Croad. would you have swapped OBree and Didak for him?

For Everit, we would've had to trade for a first round pick AND give up our first two existing picks. Not likely!

So we didn't do too bad - this is a deep draft, we'll pick up some high quality tallent with our first pick, and also with picks lower down. Which pick was Leon Davis taken at? Noel knows what he's doing, so we'll get some good young guys. It gets back to what wasbeing said before - put faith in McKee and Kinnear for a year, see what happens. We'll play finals, but you'll be surprised how good we are. I think anyway.

Also, next year Scotland, Adkins and co will ahve played outstandingly for Willi, got a few good games in the seniors, and if they're STILL not part of the teams future, we'll get some good names for them, they'll be worth a lot more than they are now.

Brown26, no offence, but who is going to want Everitt in 2 years? He is 27-28, and is not a player that will play past about 32, by his own admission. Did we strive so hard to get Everitt that we missed the boat on other trades.

Well, at least it wasn't only us that didn't trade. That other POWERHOUSE of the AFL, West Coast decided that their list shouldn't be tampered with.

Now I want to know if Scotland and Betheras will be delisted and given a chance to find new homes in the draft?

I was told from a good source today that Everitt was practically signed and sealed at the pies. This guy had the information from a StKilda Board member.

Something has obviously happened to throw a spanner in the works. Apparently we were the only club in the position to pay Everitt in our salary cap.

Based on our quiet week I thought that the Pies must have had something up there sleeve. Especially to let players like Porter be traded without having a real crack for him.

I think that the fact that nothing has happened probably means that sensible heads prevailed. The last thing we want to do as a club is bring in 2nd class players on equal or more money then players who have played their guts out for the club. Thats what StKilda did last year and look where that got them.

I think that we all were hoping for the best in this trade period. Patience is running out and there would have been no doubt that Everitt would have taken us to finals football next year.

I still feel that we need to have faith that MM has done pretty much everything right since joining the club. We are on the right track and the way we are getting there is developing our own talent, not trying to steal others, which has happened in the past.

This will make it all the more sweeter when the success comes.

Magpie Mark - that was electioneering.
Be warned, there is whole sh*tload of it comming our way from the three ringed circus in Canberra.

As for Eddie, I find it hard to be critcal of his job overall. He is not in charge of recruiting. I belive if a big name was on the market, Eddie would be a tremendous asstet in getting their signature. But he cannot overrule the match committee and section panel on player issue.

If players were targetted and chose to bypass Collingwood then I would be very dissapointed and I would say Eddie has let us down. I don't know if that is the case though. As far as I can gather, it seems the deals were not considered attracttive to those paid to make those calls. Only time will tell if they were right.

Brown 26..I tend to agree with you about the no trades. West Coast didnt do any trades either and Essendon only gave up Hardwick for a couple of picks, so we werent the only ones to stay quiet. Everitt in two years time will take him to 29 and wont be worth the gamble for a year or two of footy.

Leon was taken mid 30's, cause I remember Judkins gleaning with joy that he was still available when our pick came.

The club has probably some of the best youngsters going around.

Adkins was injured and therefore he should be firing next year.

Guy Richards has big raps on him by Balme, so I guess they are expecting him to probably fill the ruck void in 2-3 years. Didnt play this year because of Kidney Op.

Didak is pure class. He was held back on purpose this year so he should be a regular next season.

Cloke should get some senior appearances next year if not become a regular.

Lonie should be better for the experience and he should build up his stamina over the preseason.

Josh will put on more weight and strength.

Leon Davis should become the regular goal sneak.

Tarrant will become more consistant as should Rocca.

Eddie has said that he is building a side for the long term...no quick fixes as they arent sustainable...

No complaints from me, at all. I didn't want us to pick up a "name" player because that type of recruiting is fool's gold in my opinion.

We've got a great list overall. The handful of players who aren't quite up to it can be replaced via the draft.

NO TRADE = GOOD TRADE

Well done, Collingwood.

So Ed decides who comes and goes in regards to players at our club? Hmmmmm I thought that was the recruiters and coaching staff! I have faith in that our coaching staff and recruiters know what they are doing. Maybe what other clubs were asking in return from us to be able to trade some of these "names" was not worth it.........I would rather build and have long term success.....not short term!
