Ian Brewer passed away today after a short battle with Motor Neurone disease.
Ian Brewer (born 15 June 1936) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Magpies from 1956 to 1961. A full forward, he kicked 73 goals in 1958 which earned him the Coleman Medal. This tally included six goals in the Queen's Birthday clash against Melbourne in front of a then record crowd of 99346. Brewer finished the season in a premiership team. His younger brother Ross also played in the VFL.
Ian played full foward in our 1958 premiership. I personally met Ian at the 1958 reunion a couple of years ago, He was just a lovely person and a great bloke. Very sad news.
RIP Champ.

Yes nice words Heater 39.
I walked away from the night knowing it was the best collingwood function i had ever attended, Im glad i got to meet all the 58 guys. I have a feeling he may of passed away in Western Australia. The past players were trying to get him over for a game.I will treasure the conversations i had with Ian on the night.

Oh ok, I did not attend the function on the night, however I believe it was at the crown palladium and I am guessing 8 years ago?? I was 16 at the time and didn't know who they were but my father recognised a lot of them and I obtained quite a few signatures on my premiership poster. It was an experience I will never forget, grabbing an autograph from a Pies premiership team from yester-year... they were ALL soo friendly on the night. How many still alive today Joff?

It was held at the MCG in a function room and it was two years ago 2008 it was the 50th anniversary. Correct me if im wrong someone but im sure Ian's passing brings the total to three who are no longer with us which is remarkable considering that most of these guys are well into their 70's. And for the life of me i cant recall who the others were ?
Keep the weg poster mate these guys were champions through and through.

Great bloke with a great sense of humour.
Ian is only the third of the '58 boys to pass on with Gabo and Hooker Harrison.
Some photos of the great man I captured at the '58 reunion with Joffa...
(One of my all time favourite photos is the one above with Ian, Joff and Des with the mighty G as their backdrop)

It was around this time in 1958 that Ian kicked his biggest bag against Hawthorn at Victoria Park in the April 19th round two clash. 8 of Collingwood's 11 goals came from Ian Brewer's boot and we won by just 7 points on the day. Ian would go on to be our leading goal kicker in that premiership year.
Lee, Coventry, Daicos and Brewer. Premiership marksmen of the Collingwood Football Club.
Vale Ian Brewer.
