One theory is that the thread monster is a digital mutant of the sock monster. Luddites across the world were howled down for warning that the computerisation of washing machines spelled doom. Now who's laughing?

It's obviously the terminal HAL.
HAL has been lip reading again and knows the Mods about to replace him with the new model HISS. In this scenario I'm sticking with HAL. :P
