Cheer Squad at the Doggies game.

Post by AlfAndrews »

A strong committed performance by the Black and White Army this week. Led by a sterling exhibition from Joffa. A great captain's game, Joffa.

We were the away team at the Dogs home ground and most of the ground was a sea of red, white and blue. But gee they were quiet tonight. Very, very quiet.

The Collingwood Cheer Squad took the match by the throat from the first bounce and there was barely a minute went past without some sort of chant. It was pretty loud and there was some level of participation by people in surrounding areas in the first half.

But it was after half-time, as the goals began to flow, that the vibe that the Cheer Squad had worked so hard to create, took on a life of its own. Suddenly, the grog squad behind us found voice and it was glorious mayhem. And I noticed that as the third quarter went on, and we got further and further ahead, that the actual impact of the Cheer Squad became smaller. It was as if we'd done our job. We had succeeded in kick-starting the crowd ... and now the crowd was on a roll. Often our chants would be out of synch with the grog squad's chants and many of Joffa's attempts to start particular chants were drowned out by a huge "Collingwood (clap clap clap)" from the area behind us. In a way, this was unfortunate. Because it meant that much of our growing repertoire of chants could not be used effectively. On the other hand, however, it was great to hear so many of the Collingwood faithful actively involved in chanting. The effect was quite awesome and must have really shitted the Dogs' supporters right off.

The thing that really clinched our victory on the terraces, at least to my way of thinking, came very late in the match when the Dogs scored a couple of late goals. The irony of seeing their computerised Bulldog come on the scoreboard video screen to lead that ridiculous, club-generated "Doggie Doggie Doggie ... woof woof woof" chant was absolutely priceless. With all their technological skills and mega-wattage of power, they could not even begin to approach the vibe created by the Black and White Army's voice of the People.

A great victory for the REAL barracker.

8 out of 10. Great effort. Considerable improvement still needed, however.

Next week we take on the best cheer squad in the AFL. Richmond has been the measuring stick for a long time. By the end of this year I want US to be the measuring stick. This goal is achievable.

Cmon Alf,

An 8 out of 10??? It was bloody awsome to sit with the Cheer Squad. It was only the second time that I sat with the sheer squad, but this one would probably be hard to beat, as that marvellous third quarter just made everyone CrAzY!! Those drunkards behind us were just a good laugh... And love those masks..esecially the 'Scream' one.. lol

When the Pies are HOT, they REALLY ARE HOT!!!

To every body who sat with us last night a big thankyou it was magpie heaven, and thanks to you Alf, you have been a wonderful help with the chants.

Mags,

The hardest thing about trying to get something happening at 3-quarter time, and during the other breaks, is all that bloody amplified noise coming through the P.A. It's really annoying. It's pretty hard to get a chant started if you have to compete with bloody advertising etc. Last night it didn't matter because we were on a roll and the crowd was just going berserk anyway. But that normally isn't going to happen.

It's a pity really, because 3-Quarter time should be a great time to really get the crowd worked up into a frenzy. That sort of thing can really lift a team.
