Well, last week - but who's counting?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_Ladyland

The album containing Jimi's only (yes, really!!!) US top 40 single.

In 2013, Rolling Stone conducted a readers' poll to select the 10 "best" Hendrix songs. The top 10 included two songs from this record - that single at number 3 (recorded about 15 minutes after the original was released on John Wesley Harding and - to be fair - taking a good lyric to a whole other place) and the most distinctive piece of guitar-playing ever committed to disc - the Slight Return. Shortly after he died, the Slight Return was released as a single in the UK and the US. Naturally, it reached number 1 in the UK - but it sank without a trace in the US. Then again, as Rolling Stone says "it's since been played on classic rock radio roughly 10 billion times." https://www.rollingstone.com/music/musi ... rn-216531/

Out of the mouth of one of the Universe's most technically adept players, young Joe is quoted as saying: "It's just the greatest piece of electric guitar work ever recorded. In fact, the whole song could be considered the holy grail of guitar expression and technique. It is a beacon of humanity." https://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars ... cks-178350

There's a 50th anniversary box set coming out on 9 November: https://www.jimihendrix.com/news/the-ji ... ember-9th/

In the meantime, here's a Dylan cover and the Slight Return:

What a great list of musical tracks P4S. So many brilliant artists and musicians!
I've just done a quick run through and feel like I've gone back in time, to a place where music had melody and throbbing beat!! Okay, sometimes the lyrics weren't always profound. :)
"The Israelites". Didn't think anyone else would ever recall that one, but I loved it!!!
Going to go back through all the videos and play each of them in full.

This is going to be like the White Album Esher Demos release. You buy it, listen to the demos once, go "meh" and then you're stuck with a CD that you already own a copy of. The sad thing is I'll definitely be buying it.

And, so, we come to this - my favourite album of all time, released in 1969. It's listed in "1,001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die", so you can do that, here, now and tick it off.

Many of you know, I expect, that I am (a) obsessed by the sound of a grand piano and (b) frequently annoyed by music that Chopin, Liszt, Ravel, Debussy or Ligeti didn't write. I always liked rock music, though, and came to this album because Donovan Leitch (he of "Mellow Yellow", "Sunshine Superman", "Season of the Witch" and "Hurdy Gurdy Man" fame) used to play a beautiful, but obscure song called "House of Jansch" and another called "Bert's Blues", each named for the amazing guitarist who was one of the musicians in this remarkable group. When I heard this album, I stopped going to classes at school, stopped playing piano for about a decade, taught myself to play finger-style acoustic guitar, started folk bands and began playing obscure British and American folk songs, all sung in 4-part harmony. So, all in all, it was a very bad influence on me.

What can I say about the record? This album features the five best musicians ever assembled in one place playing some of the most inventive, hypnotic and subtle music ever committed to vinyl (although, sadly, not a piano in sight). I suppose my favourite songs on it are the remarkable re-imaginings of the ancient folk songs "Once I Had a Sweetheart" (really, bowed double-bass and sitar anchoring a traditional English ballad?) and "House Carpenter" (Bert's plaintive, foreboding banjo, his vocal personification of Satan, Jacqui's magnificent unaccompanied stanza at the most dramatic moment of the tale, John's evil presence on sitar and the whole underpinned by the most insane rhythm section ever committed to disc) but I am aware that the album contains many songs that other people consider to be their "all-time" favourite song (especially the opener "Light Flight", the cover of "Sally Go Round the Roses" and Bert's two vocal masterpieces, "Springtime Promises" and "Train Song (Basket of Light)". For 50 years, this record has made people weep at the beauty of the sounds it contains.

As Jacqui sings, "I'll set sail of silver and steer toward the sun...."

OK, John legend, that was a joker in the pack I didn't know was there.

The rest were all a bit Meh, but while I've corrupted your thread to Simon and Garfunkel covers, has there ever been a better version of Sound of Silence than this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9Dg-g7t2l4

He sings well but I don’t really like Sounds of Silence as a big production number. I actually prefer the first release (from the S & G album Wednesday Morning, 3 AM), with just the two voices and the acoustic guitar before the full band was added, to the famous one.

I’ve seen John Legend sing Bridge in concert. He’s not my thing but he is a brilliant singer.
