How would you describe your religious beliefs?

Post by stui magpie »

OK, the Poll no one asked for.

I'm not interested in what religion you follow, if any, but feel free to disclose it if you wish.

For the poll, definitions are as follows:

Strong: You pray to your deity regularly and attend a place of worship. Your religion guides your behaviour in your life, you try to behave as expected at all times

Moderate. You pray irregularly, haven't been to a place of worship for a while, you generally try to act accordingly to your religion but aren't overly strict about it.

Weak. You refer to yourself as a "label" but don't pray (except when watching Collingwood games), don't attend a place of worship and generally your religion plays little part in your day to day life.

Agnostic. You're open to the idea that a god (or gods) may or may not exist, but there's no way to prove it either way so religion just isn't part of your life

Atheist. There are no gods, no higher beings exist.

In case none of these options work for you, I've added in "other" as a choice so you can explain yourself. Generally though, try to pick the option that is closest to how you feel, it doesn't have to be a perfect fit.

Starting off, my family is not religious. I was sent to a Methodist Sunday School and while I did enjoy some of it, like the principles of being nice to each other, I grew sceptical at an early age and stopped going when I was 12.

I could fit under Agnostic or weak, if I chose very weak, but best fit would be agnostic. I'm open to the idea a higher power could exist, I'm also open to the idea that we're all living in a computer simulation and that we are actually the equivalent of an Alien Ant Farm, scurrying around for the amusement of others.

I picked atheist; but considering some of the atheists I've met i'm not sure I want to on the same bus as them. Probably atheist/agnostic in reality.

We see a lot of talk about freedom of religion; meaning your obliged to choose one. Freedom from religion is also important but then most people who have drafted laws in the past have assumed everyone is religious.

For me, freedom of religion is freedom of choice to follow whatever beliefs float your boat provided your behaviour in doing so doesn't conflict with the law, which should be divorced from religion.

Unfortunately we do have too many of our law makers influenced by their religious beliefs

We were Mics - had to go to church and Sunday school every week

Thankfully I got kicked out when I was about 8 yrs for asking who made God - they were doing all that on the first day he made blah blah blah.

The nun went ballistic and I was very unpopular with the mother for some time - I thought it was a reasonable question!

I'm an atheist.

My late father (he was never on time) also asked that question when learning the first testament of then local Rabbi in the late 1920's in a willage sorry Village in Poland. He was given a hiding for being impudent and there commenced his lifelong atheism although we still had to have a religious education and celebrate the high holidays (Passover, New Year and Day of Atonement) akin to Easter and Christmas by going to Synagogue on those days and having family celebrations)

Atheist. After one of our 'religious education' classes at state primary school, I went home and told Mum I couldn't wait to die because our RE teacher had said you can fly around like Superman in the sky... That was the last RE lesson I was ever part of

Interesting response so far from a small sample size.

The majority aren't religious but 2/3 who are consider themselves strong in their belief.
