Heard the afl are going to trail a ball made of rubber made by sheerin after this season. Same material as in the nrl with their steeden ball. If successful they may implement it in 2021 season. They also the makers developing a type of grippy leather rubber compound too which is lighter and more durable then the regular leather.
To me the ball needs a big improve and needs to be better.
Back in 1980's 1990's and early 2000's the ball was better.
The ball has gone backwards these last few years in terms of quality and no one can grip it either.
Also take off the advertising on the ball they make the ball slippery too.
I saw Eddie talking about this yesterday.
I think the issue is there is too much varnish on the yellow balls
I assume the main purpose is to repel water but surely we have other technology these days that can be used.
Forget about using rubber as a substitute, it would create a lot more problems
