WA State Election Result

Post by Pies4shaw »

It will be interesting to see if the ALP's impending electoral landslide is sufficiently large to enable them to take control of the upper house and roll back the upper house gerrymander by which a vote in Perth is worth about a third of a vote in the bush.

Antony Green has called the election with just 1% of the vote counted (because the swing is so ridiculously large that the LNP can't win).

Here's the thing, though. The LNP hasn't lost by that much - they're well within the 7,000,000 votes Trump lost by in November. Mind you, I'm not sure that 59:0 is that good for democracy. Maybe a Green or two will swap into pole position after some LNP preferences somewhere.

Election coverage quote: "It looks like the Liberal Party's members in the new Parliament will be able to seat themselves comfortably in a Toyota Corolla".

There is also a possibility that the Nats will finish up as the "senior" opposition party (that is, they might need to use the three back seats in that Corolla).

From the ABC blog:
Antony Green says Zak Kirkup WILL lose his seat
That's based on very early results from Dawesville. If it happens, Mr Kirkup will be the first party leader in 88 years to lose his seat.

That is huge. Reminds me of the time Malcolm Fraser lost his seat.

The vehicles are shrinking - they're now describing the Opposition members as "able to fit comfortably into a motorbike with a sidecar".

The immediate past leader of the Opposition, Liza Harvey, looks like she's lost her seat.

Speaking Federally, the Liberal spokesperson on the ABC just described "Young Christian" as "under some pressure".

"Obviously what has happened with respect to Dawsville is devastating and across the state," he said.

"It is a loss that will be difficult to bear

"It is a loss that all of us feel. But in so doing we must remember that 2021 is not an end but a beginning.

"In so doing we must remember that it is an obligation we all have to make sure that over the next four years we do all that we can to help rebuild the party.

"Our obligation now as Liberals is to the people of Western Australia. Over the next four years, with a very small number of members, we must do all -- we must do all we can to hold Labor to account because for the next four years it's gonna matter more than ever that there are Liberal Party members in the WA Parliament and that they are working with our full support to hold Labor to account."
Abe Lincoln didn't help with that last paragraph, I think.

Looks like the Libs will have two seats. Do they need a leader, or "co-captains"?

That was an absolute flogging.

Which is somewhat appropriate considering McGowan is an absolute Flog.

Including the whole of the eligible voting population of Western Australia, your opinion takes the total number of people who hold that view up to about 5, Stui.
