Draft Night Blunder perhaps? The critique of Hine et al

Post by inxs88 »

Interesting footage inside the club recruiters bunker on draft night with the club rating Arie Schoenmaker for the second round pick. With Jiath still available at pick 39, we swooped, pardon the pun, then packed up, Hine does a presser and the team bailed.

Now, consider this. With a pre-arranged agenda of only taking two picks, Schoenmakers slips through to our third pick on the night, yet we aren't their to take advantage of this. St Kilda ultimately take him at pick 62 and we default to the Summer equivalent of a "football reality show" whereby we have a Supplementary List Playoff for not one, two or three, but now four (McStay injury) players to complete our list.

The point being, is that by ignoring picks 40-64 on Draft Night, taking zero rookies or Pre-season selections, we are now auditioning players nominally and industry ranked at 85+ in terms of their footy ranking in:

* Josh Eyre
* Sam Sofronidis
* Jack Bytel
* Campbell Hustwaite
* Lachie Sullivan
* Brynn Teakle &
* Ned Long

If they just have stayed put and done what they did in 2014 with Tom Langdon falling to pick 65, we may have snared a talent in Schoenmakers who by the club's own admission was rated in the top 35.

Many may see this as a moot point as we bask in the glory of 2023 Premiership aftermath bliss, but I'll be watching Schoenmaker's career with great interest.

All good in theory until the real reason he slipped to pick 62 and was lucky to be picked up at all emerges.
Basically his character assessment saw clubs close the book.

Few draft picks outside the top ten make an impact in their first year. Collingwood is in the window, so it’s an obvious strategy to go for mature players who can immediately step in to replace injuries. That’s why we stopped at two picks and have set up an entertaining pre-season. And apart from who and how many get picked up, having half a dozen mature players desperate to prove themselves raises the tension for the whole group and is a great antidote to any post-granny drop off in intensity.

I think Rex makes some good points in the clubs possible thinking. Clearly Schoenmakers was considered a risk by most clubs given where he was selected and once he is selected, he comes with a two year min commitment.
The beauty of PSS candidates and MSD selections is that they don’t come with an initial two year commitment or contract. In the case of PSS candidates, the club gets to see them close up and personal before making any final decisions on them. Any MSD selection will have likely had half a season of their current form on display to help with any clubs decision to draft them or not.
Personally, I like what the club has done. What better exposure to a number of potential late additions to the list could you get, than to have them directly under the watchful eyes of the clubs coaching panel for a couple months.

I wouldn't be taking too seriously what the club says about who we rated, when and where. In truth, it's all smoke and mirrors. So far, under the guidance of Wright, I've become very confident in the drafting strategy and tactics of our recruiters. Of course, only time will tell.

That’s probably the reason he eventually made his way to StKilda.

He was always going to slide due to this infringement but let's not forget Charlie Curnow was caught drink driving 7 days before the Draft.

^ the slide wasn't from the drinking; it was what proceeded that. The drinking / buying alcohol for minors, even if they were team-mates effectively confirmed the warning signals on his character.

With regard our selectors packing up after pick two I thought I’d look at where our list comes from. If we take three of the six SSPs on offer (and I believe we will) the origins of our players are as follows:
National Draft Collingwood picks
9 x first round
6 x second round
2 x third round
2 x fourth round
Plus
11 traded in
12 SSP/MSD/rookie
So, we have only kept 4 out of 42 from picks later than round two. 21 out of 42 have come from elsewhere as mature players (apart from Begg and Steene) who can play immediately.
I know there are late pick diamonds like Swan and Langdon, but they’re impossible to pick (if obviously good they go early).
I don’t know if the above is just a quirk or a specific policy, perhaps necessary because of past over-spending? But hey, we won the Grand Final so I’m happy to go with it!
Compared to 2018 we were pretty much able to cover for all the injuries throughout 2023. Having Frampton and Markov made the difference.
With Allan and possibly DiMattia up to standard, we’ll have 40/42 players capable of playing seniors, leaving only Steene and TJ a year more to mature. That’s real depth.

^ that's some great analytics Rex, I'll be interested to compare that to our premiership years and compare the mix to rival Clubs ahead of the '24 season.
