Nice to see Wil Parker selected for his first VFL game as Sam Glover brings up 50 VFL matches.

Oscar Steene considering surgery for a repeat of his dislocated toe is another blow to our tall stocks. Hopefully our only performing AFL listed forward in the VFL big Joe Richards can snag a bag today.

Harrison is the named emergency for the AFL match against Port, not sure if he gets and AFL or VFL run this weekend or is held over for Anzac Day.
Sullivan has been managed from the VFL team suggesting he could yet be an emergency or debut on Anzac Day himself.

Let's see how the midfield of Begg, Macrae, Allan, Bytel and Carmichael stand up then

Team selection:

B: S. Glover 50, C. Dean 43, C. MacDonald 74
HB: T. Jiath 19, O. Markov 37, C. Lane 48
C: J. Bytel 27, F. Macrae (18, J. Carmichael 12
HF: J. Hutchinson 49, J. Richards 29, H. Kennedy 53
F: P. Farrant 68, B. Crocker 47, A. Johnson 40
R: A. Begg 39, E. Allan 16, N. Long 55

INT: W. Parker 45, C. Willis 64*, R. Sparkes 51, L. Purcell 65, T. Wilson 56

EMG: R. Penny 62, J. Longmire 57, Y. Ashwin 77, C. Mulvogue 66, L. Sullivan 33, H. Harrison 36

IN: P. Farrant, W. Parker, L. Purcell, C. Willis
OUT: H. Harrison (AFL emergency), L. Sullivan (AFL holdover), O. Steene (concussion), J. Hartman

NEW: Patrick Farrant, 24, 190cm, Bridgetown/Swan Districts; Wil Parker, 21, 183cm, Eastern Ranges/East Ringwood

Interesting that the Pies have Sullivan (managed) & Steene (toe) whereas the above team from the VFL website is different.

Expect some changes to the above eam depending on what happens with the AFL team today.

Looking forward to seeing Parker and Farrant play.

Pies should beat Coburg even without Harrison & Sullivan but need on to be on their game from the 1st bounce.

Hey D B, question for you.
It’s my understanding Reef McInnes could now play for the VFL team against Coburg. The club may yet decide to play him in the VFL because of his very restricted game time today ( or they may not either because of the short turnaround against Essendon )
Can you add anymore to the above or have I just got it totally wrong ?

Pies2016, from the info I could find, as a stand alone VFL side there is no restriction on how many AFL listed players can be selected each week or a player being named in the AFL team and then playing in the VFL.

From my memory this hasn't happened for a while. Tony Armstrong is the most recent I think.

I doubt they would play Reef, as you have said due to short break to Anzac day and also it would mean dropping someone from the team. Not sure who would go out. Farrant is a forward and his first game today, so the club will be keen to see him play.

Having said that, there are often changes to the team named hence the list of emergencies.

Stui, club website injury update has Steene as a dislocated toe. An injury he has had before. I would go with what is on the club website rather than VFL in this case.

Thanks D B ! I definitely remember the AFL changed the rules at some point and put the decision to play the tactical sub again on the same weekend in the hands of the clubs but I couldn’t remember or find the rules surrounding those changes. Would normally be a perfect situation for Reef to play again after only 15 mins game time in the AFL but the short turnaround possibly adds another layer to that decision.
As you pointed out also, we should beat Coburg with the players we have selected and in truth, this is one of those games where we should all “ keep a lid on it “ when highlighting the better players performances against the lowly VFL teams. The difference in opposition between Coburg at Piranha park and the Bombers or Blues at the MCG is the equivalent of the old chalk and cheese analogy.

Pies VFL struggling through the midfield and Coburg's aerial dominance. Had 3 or 4 points in the first quarter that should have been goals.

Pies VFL key forward Patrick Farrant looks an interesting prospect. Good height, big shoulders and long hair. First VFL game after bags of goals for the Fitzroy Lions. Some good early marks and field kicks but wayward in front of goal.

Ed Allan all over the shop today. Not going hard enough and beaten easily in the contest. Needs to improve.
Ned Long has had a bit but needs to finish better.
Fin Macrae has had a bit around the ground but collectively the Pies Mids getting smashed in the centre.

Wil Parker out of the back pocket has looked good in the 2nd quarter. Some good contests and a great goal after a 50m penalty.

I should add Tew Jiath has been good and probably the best of the AFL listed players so far.

Jack Hutchison has been good and just took another VFL Mark of the Year contender and converted from 45degrees 30m out. This kid looks the goods.

Half time:

Coburg 6.8.44 leading Pies 6.5.41

Goals: Hutchinson 2 Parker, Crocker, Carmichael, Long

Getting smashed in the clearances (hitouts pretty even) and inside 50s 33 to 18 in favour of Coburg. Begg getting beaten in the ruck but has 6 tackles.

Pies need to get their sh*t together in the 2nd half or they will get rolled in this game.

Watched second quarter only
Half time Pies 6 5 ( 41 ) Coburg 6 8 ( 44 )
Hutchison the only multiple goal kicker with two.

Looked to me like we finally reached our tipping point with so many AFL listed players now missing and we’ve played accordingly with a fumbly brand of footy. Coburg have been good but we’ve allowed them to many uncontested possessions and ground balls during that quarter.
We’re plugging holes and seeing the likes of Johnson play as a second ruck and supporting in defence, while Carmichael is up on the wing, having played as a permanent forward last week and kicking three.
According to the commentators, Jaith and Glover have been good, while Markov has been our highest possession winner ( 15 ) to date.
Look out for the Hutchison hanger in the second quarter cause it’s right up there for the mark of the year contenders.
Obviously we’re still right in it but we need to retain the ball for longer to turn it back into a territory game and convert. Ultimately the game might depend on how long Coburg can bring the heat because currently it’s enough for them to have an unlikely lead at half time.

Macrae & Allen still a little disappointing. Should be pushing for senior selection by now. Consistency is not there at all.
I’ve said it 100 times Begg is not a ruckman & should be tried as a full time forward.

Disappointing effort, mild sunny day, perfect conditions to play and we got rolled. I half watched half listened to the first half on the tablet while doing some cooking then watched the second half.

Put a line through Ash. 2 possessions until time on in the last then he suddenly starts jumping for marks and gets a goal. Begg may have 10% of Ash's talent but he would offer more in the AFL team.

Fin doesn't have what it takes to be a quality AFL level Mid.

Allen I hardly noticed. Our best midfielder is Ned Long who didn't have a great day today.

TJ has some good dance steps and looks like a player, despite having no calves.

Dean did some good things in the second half when he was basically a loose man down back.

The young bloke from WA via Fitroy Stars showed some promise in his first VFL outing
