No ruck support for Begg again. Do we really need Krueger and Johnson as back up ruck?

McRae indicated that McCreery was knocked out so he is out of the AFL for next week. He also said De Goey will most likely miss- no word on Mitchell.

Hopefully, some guys in the VFL will get the opportunity at the next level soon- provided they earn it...

I am one of few of Krueger's fans here, but he could be a vital stop-gap until McStay returns (whether in 2024 or 2025). Jath has pace and skill and looks composed- at least at VFL level. Macrae- just got to keep piling up clearances and possessions- he must be a chance at elevation, surely!! Would not be surprised if Charlie Dean got a call up to the senior team, plays back and Frampton plays second ruck to spell Cox...

Importantly- we need the VFL team to play finals- it is crucial to keep guys on the park in September...

Sullivan went past Macrae by a while last night. Came on, impacted and got through offensively and defensively. Team player. But he comes with a stronger body and a different desire.

Macrae does have to keep piling it up. He is not an impact player. Look at his progression in the VFL. He's a slow burn. He will likely be ok at AFL if he's allowed to spend time there and settle in and grow. He has not had that opportunity and unlikely with our recent improvement and if the group stays fit on the park. How many years has he got left on his contract. This year more than ever if he doesn't get a look in and a consistent run at AFL level he will look for a spot on another list.

Looking forward to Jiath building his tank and pressure work. He's got some smooth moves and will look good on the bigger AFL grounds but needs to do the hard work.

Demattia showed a bit last week. Made some important spoils, tackles, taps, smothers etc. All the hard things. Keep it up son

^ Just to answer your specific question, Macrae is contracted to end 2025.

Thanks Pies4shaw. 2025 so has some lowly trade value for us still this year but we won't delist him.

Be interesting to see how the year pans out and If Macrae gets a chance soon or whether one of Bytel, Demattia, Ryan, Carmichael and Jiath get a call up first before Macrae

I haven't seen any of the VFL game but seems the pies are doing well to be 8points down at half time. They are getting smashed on the stats sheet everywhere and won the second quarter

I missed the game, just checked the stats on the AFL website. Sodomised in every statistical measurement except tackles and somehow only lost by 27 points.

With Beau now out for WCE and the possibility Schultz is suspended, I'll be keen to see who stepped up today. (Assuming JDG and Titch miss another week too).

Just seen the scores - away enjoying a weekend at a wine and food festival.

Disappointing but not unexpected result

Players stats sheet is horrible reading. Almost like we didn’t touch the pill. Hopefully some instructions were given and followed for possible candidates in other areas not shown in the stats. Team stats indicate we should have been belted.

The wheels are off in the vfl and I wouldn’t say we have had a long injury list.

When do we start getting concerned about young Allan not showing much at vfl level?

At least Macrae and Bytel did get a fair amount of disposals and will hopefully get a run v west coast. The eagles don’t look awful of late and we all have PTSD from 2022 at marvel.

How did Harry DeMattia go? By the stats not much but it doesn't say how much time he spent on the ground. They are a good club Southport, that's who should be in the AFl not the GCS.

There was a glitch in the VFL stats being updated live for a period, so it depends when supporters checked the numbers. Having said that, some players were below their usual output.
We actually do have a decent injury list forming in the VFL because some of our best VFL listed players didn’t play on the weekend either. Sofranidis hasn’t played for a while and Ned Long, Crocker and Hutchison all missed this game also. Jacob Ryan pulled out for some reason and obviously Markov and Sullivan were elevated to replace our AFL outs. That’s something like SIX outs from last week and players you’re bringing in to replace them don’t even know the names of their new team mates.
The current problem with the VFL team is very obvious. We simply have no one ( other than Johnson ) who can take an overhead contested mark in the VFL. We get smashed in the air every week. Even Begg plays undersized in the ruck every week with Steene out. This week Southport, who aren’t world beaters, took more than twice as many marks than we did.
Bytel and MacRae must have done a power of work to get close to 30 possessions each but with Long and Sullivan both out, they were like the boy with the barrow. Both had the job in front of them. Supposedly, McInnes played up the ground this game and was pretty good too.
If there’s any players to come from the VFL to replace McCreery and Schultz, it will likely be from MacRae, Bytel or McInnes on form and experience or maybe Richards as a long shot if they’re looking to replace like for like.
