Love the list, the players I have seperated above I think would be in any teams first 23 (18 players in total), in 2024 we need a few of those listed in the OP aged between 18 - 27 to really stand up and demand selection for us to go back to back or better.
In the end, it's not going to matter how many breaths you took, but how many moments took your breath away

I see the Club is in the throes of updating recent weigh-ins or they've responded to Big Brothers edict at AFL House to not reveal player weights in the AFL Season Guide.

Jo, when taking photos this year, could you be sure to capture players good side.

As an update I see Pat Lipinski & the club are working on a contract extension
The club has already locked away DeGoey and the Daicos boys
The twenty to twenty seven age group one would hope is crucial to the end of the 2020 ,s
I'm not arguing--just explaining why i am right

Midfielder Patrick Lipinski has put pen to paper signing a three-year contract extension which will see him remain a Magpie until at least the end of 2027.
Finlay Macrae and Darcy Cameron have both penned a one-year extension to remain at the Pies until the end of 2025 and 2026 respectively.

Congratulations to all three.
On the basis of this, I am sure Finn McCrae will be getting a call up for the seniors very soon.
Great to see the confidence our coaches are placing in Pat Lipinski, and in Darcy Cameron.
Free Julian Assange!!

Sam Sonfridis has signed with the VFL Pies.
Missed out in the SSP after training with the Pies and a limited trial with Essendon.
Perhaps the club is thinking ahead in case Murphy decides to retire.
Anyway, he will be a great addition to the VFL team

^^^^Happy to hear this news. I don’t know why but I have a gut feeling that he can develop into a decent player with the experience gained in the VFL.

With Murph's retirement, our average age from Opening Round: 25.9 (oldest) just worsened.

The List

Post by masoncox »

I was talking to my brother today and he was concerned about our recruitment.
Now that is a bit funny considering we are the current premiers.
But he has a point.
He stated that 13 players not including Cox were picked up outside the national draft. Mid season drafts. preseason drafts etc....
Now we have 13 players who were overlooked at the national draft at least once.
He stated that this overreliance is not healthy.
We had 3 spots that was not filled at the national draft last year. Besides from Noble who wasn't picked in the GF no player from the 13 has stood out.
You will always get a diamond from a bucket load of long shot recruits but you need a bucket load of players to jag just one.
I have attended a few VFL games this year and I have seen nothing that got me excited except for maybe JT.
It should be noted that Our VFL team has lost 9 in a row and we sit near bottom of the ladder.
We are currently 10 losses and 2 Wins.
The pantry seems bare.
We have no first round pick this year and i am not sure about our second round pick.
There is a possiblity that we are facing going over the cliff.

Collingwood has had a poor time at the national draft since the disaster of 2013 when we chose Scharenberg and Freeman with our two top 10 picks. The choice of Stephenson in 2017 seemed a masterstroke in 2018 that nearly won a premiership, but that turned out badly as well when for reasons that I still don't understand his form dropped off the face of the earth.
The draft of 2020 where our first choice of Henry turned out a dud, but probably helped win last years premiership by helping us secure Tom Mitchell. Long term I fear that Ollie Henry will be a terrific player for Geelong but that's another story.
However, what Collingwood has done well is via the trades and recruitment via other sources i.e. the Cat B rookies and mid season, pre-season drafts to secure highly rated talent. The securing of Will Parker and hopefully Alex Condon before next season is a great example of getting first round draft talent to the club, albeit a bit later than their 18th Birthday years. Last years trade for Lachie Schultz was praised as a positive at the time although the pundits are now bemoaning the lack of a first round pick this year. I think Schultz has shown he is worth the pick that will hopefully be higher than pick 15 in this years draft.
Eventually Collingwoods extended relative success since 2018 is going to cost us in talent as stalwarts such as Pendlebury, Sidebottom, Howe, Cox, Mihocek and even Mitchell retire over the next couple of years and due to lack of high end draft picks we are unable to replace them with top end talent. However, I think with good coaching and at least 6 A-graders in the team then that team with the rest of the team being good role models we can remain competitive, especially with the best player in the competition being Nick Daicos playing at the current level of skill and game impact!
At least Collingwood is currently a destination club with some room in the salary cap to be in the hunt for players such as Josh Battle, Bailey Smith and a few others who appear to be available. Much better position than we were at the end of 2020.

The talk has gone extremely quiet about Battle, Smith, some others etc. Maybe this was all pie in the sky stuff anyway

I agree it would have been good to go harder, but we had a weak hand as he was out of contract.

Exactly, Collingwood was always going to struggle to retain Henry after he declined to re-sign a new contract offered during the 2022 season and his heart was clearly still with Geelong. The annoying thing is that Geelong paid unders for a young, high draft pick, proven player who is clearly going to be a very good player for a long time.

The only consolation is that Collingwood managed to pick up Tom Mitchell from the deal and he played a crucial role in helping Collingwood beat Brisbane in the Grand Final. The downside is that Mitchell will be finished next year whereas Henry will be kicking goals for Geelong for another decade. :(
