Re: Dustin Martin and Tom Hawkins retire
Both over 300 games
Both multiple premierships
Both had great careers
Martin 2 norm smiths a Brownlow, 4 best and fairests, a league MVP and long list of other awards
The best player from the 2009 draft by the length of the Hume highway (notable others Nat Fyfe Max Gawn)
Easy to understand there decisions
Game has passed them by and injuries are now coming too often
Best wishes to both in retirement and I hope life after football is as good to them as football was

^ Steady on. Second-best, perhaps.
Trivia question: Which 200-game champion club captain won a premiership in his first season after being drafted in 2009?

Re: Dustin Martin and Tom Hawkins retire
Being a little more generous about them, there's two blokes who won't catch Pendlebury's games tally.
If it matters, Martin won the Norm Smith 3 times (17, 19 and 20).

Re: Dustin Martin and Tom Hawkins retire
Also Andrew Gaff is retiring. Doesn't deserve his own thread.

If you mean Mitch Duncan I think your wrong mate
And thank you he won 3 norm smiths I mis typed
You can also so add during that tigers run Martin in all finals appearances he was ranked #1 player in a game on all but 3 occasions
And he was rated by champion data the #1 player in the game over a entire season on 5 occasions

Re: Dustin Martin and Tom Hawkins retire
Gaff was a interesting footballer
Had a period of about 18 months when he was elite
Either side or that he was barely average
I think IMO he wasn’t dedicated to the game as he could have been
But good luck in retirement
I’m sure over the next few weeks we will add more names to the retirement list

I won't miss Hawkins. He always turned to the CS after they beat us with some smart face.
I wonder if he'll be fit in time to play again. Cats looking like they may finish between 5-8 atm. Geez, I'd love to knock them out in his last match. But that seems unlikely that we'll meet up now.

Scully, Trengove, Morobito.... it really wasn't a great draft; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_AFL_draft

Re: Dustin Martin and Tom Hawkins retire
And now Heppell has announced his retirement. He has played in 252 games, captained Essendon for 6 seasons, won a B&F there, got named AA once (in 2014) and helped the Bumblers to finals defeat in 5 out of finals. May the next 20 Essendon captains be just as successful!
Re: Dustin Martin and Tom Hawkins retire
^ His coach described him as "a legend of the Essendon Football Club" in his presser today. I'm with Scott on this - Heppell has contributed heavily to all of Essendon's recent success.
Meanwhile, Zach Tuohy has announced his retirement after the season, too.

Re: Dustin Martin and Tom Hawkins retire
He had a decent back-hander for tennis though; just ask Glassjaw! Ah, the highs and lows of 2018...qldmagpie67 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2024 4:25 pm Gaff was a interesting footballer
