Stan Magro - WA Hall of Fame Inductee

Post by Take_a_Screamer »

Mods: Not sure where to place this topic. There used to be a forum on Nicks' to discuss previous players. But can't find it.

Remembered as one of the game's finest tacklers, Magro played in three losing Grand Finals over six seasons for the Magpies, including the 1977 draw & 1979 thriller.

Stan Magro was regarded as a hard footballer in one of the toughest era. He carved a niche for himself in the WAFL and VFL as a centreman-cum-back pocket in more than 200 games over 15 seasons with South Fremantle, Collingwood and East Perth before venturing into coaching.

Stan Magro, Max and Wayne Richardson were all recruited from the same club: South Fremantle.
Stan Magro played for Collingwood from 1977 to 1982, appearing in 96 games and kicking 19 goals.
One of the toughest players to play for Collingwood with a fierce attack on the ball.

Yes I was at that game as well but guys forgive my memory lapses, did he also once bump Leigh Matthews into the next suburb when playing hawthorn at Vic Park? Or was that fellow WA toughman Worthington?
I term the current Collingwood attack based strategy “Unceasing Waves” like on a stormy and windy day with rough seas. A Perfect Storm ☔️

Stan Magro and Kevin Worthington... what a great duo to have on the full backline. Those two put the fear of god into their opponents and they matched their toughness with good footy skills too. I once heard a funny story about Carlton's Wayne "The Dominator" Johnson sitting in a toilet cubicle at a Melbourne nightclub when Magro & Worthington walked into the area talking about how they hated all Carlton players and what they would like to do to some of them including Johnson. Johnson laughed that he was too scared to emerge from the cubicle till he was sure that Magro and Worthington had left.
Collingwood Domination. Envy of the Nation!

I have a recollection that Matthews referred to Phil Manassa ironing him out.
I can’t remember Magro getting Matthews.
I was at the game at Princes Park when Magro ko’d Jesaulenko. The crowd went quiet because it looked like he was dead. A few weeks later at Vic Park he almost did the same thing to Tony Morwood in similar circumstances but Morwood was good enough to sway out of the way at the last moment. Magro launched, missed, and rolled over two or three times.

^ I was there, too. He'd get about 20 weeks for doing that in today's game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-v8V1_xVSd8

I think Peter Landy went a bit early saying he was "not sure it was accidental".
