Ummm no. They went back because they got a better pay deal out of the VFL. They were on strike because the VFL refused to pay them Sunday penalty rates - despite everyone else getting them when Sunday football matches started. The u/19 umpiring group scabbed on them. Nice story tho bro....

J. Ralph:
'While the AFL backed in its umpire Mat Nicholls, other examples were highlighted where players were not penalised for an identical infraction.
In the Hawthorn-Brisbane game, James Worpel handed the ball to Will Day at a stoppage. He handed the ball to the umpire without penalty.
Brisbane's Lachie Neale also handed the ball to teammate Cam Rayner, who dropped the ball to the ground at a boundary throw-in. Neither player was penalised.'

^the Umpires 'ins' will be closely monitored for our upcoming matches...
Imagine if it happened at Vic Park and what the crowd would have been like within such close proximity to the field. _________________ "The Club's not Jock, Ted and Gerry" (& Eddie)

AFL rant — time wasting crackdown on a game that’s already the fastest it’s ever been, with record number of injuries this season… absolute muppets. Fly should have gone harder about the draw and injuries. Voss and Hardwick criticised the umpiring last week and didn’t get fined. we’ll be watching our VFL team for the rest of the season. |

It’s not a hard and fast rule, time wasting is up to interpretation like anything else. That’s why some get paid and others don’t.
King Baldy the 1st, was clearly irritated by Steele a few minutes earlier and looked to “square up”. However Steele didn’t do anything wrong he wasn’t even in possession of the ball, it wasn’t for him to give the ball back. _________________ Human behavioural studies suggest people who use a lot of swear words tend to be more honest & trustworthy. |

Good alternative and common sense perspective on SEN AFL from "Former AFL umpire Dean Margetts wouldn’t have paid the controversial free kick that was awarded to Fremantle..."
As well, "... Margetts went back through the rationale surrounding the rule and explained why he didn’t believe Sullivan was time-wasting at all.
He says there was nothing to delay as the clock had stopped and that handing the ball to Daicos, while he faced away from Nicholls, was of no benefit to his team..."

Nicholls embarrassed himself and he embarrassed the AFL.
And how do the AFL respond? Well they embarrassed themselves of course.
Everyone in the country knows it was a stupid decision and the AFL should have just said that. _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |

It appears the Nicholls late penalty was planted in his mind 3 minutes earlier when at a stoppage Sidey left the ball on the ground despite Nicholls calling his name twice to hand it to him as Sidey stood over it.
Sidey ignored it looking around for his man to go to at the stoppage
The footage shows Nicholls going to the ball staring at Sidey like Sidey has killed his cat or something
In my mind this was a umpire who had predetermined that the next time a Collingwood player didn’t hand him the ball he was blowing a penalty no matter what
This in itself constitutes absolute bias
Yes it’s a free kick if you follow the strict letter of the law but even in this game it happened twice a player didn’t hand the ball to the umpire (including Nicholls once) and across the league it happened several times ion the weekend with our penalty.
There is nothing in the rules that says a player must bend over pick up the ball and hand it too an umpire. It basically says that if a player is in possession of the ball at the time a ball up or boundary throw in occurs he must hand it to the umpire. Sidey wasn’t in possession of the ball it was a ball in dispute but Nicholls singled out Sidey to pick it up snd hand it to him.
You can go through every game every weekend and see dozens of times a player leaves the ball on the ground and the umpire picking it up.
This predetermined action from Nicholls should be investigated by the AFL immediately |

AFL won’t do anything, they have already ticked off on it!
The trouble in today’s game is umpires demand respect by slapping you in the face!
The only way to get respect is to earn it! _________________ Never disperse your focus unless absolutely necessary. Face one adversary at a time!

Time to move on, we had the chance to win the game, that free wasn’t the deciding factor, injuries & inaccuracy were. _________________ WE WERE ROBBED, RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME, RIGHT IN FRONT OF MEEE!

As long as the decision was technically "correct", they were never going to go against the grain and throw Nicholls under the bus.
It was a stupid decision, but the AFL only admits to an error if it's so blatantly wrong that you can't spin it. For example, they admitted the goal umpire made a mistake and stood him down for the finals after calling a behind instead of a goal for Ben Keays' set shot last year which cost Adelaide a finals spot. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023 | |
