Matt Thomas gets a week for his knock on Harvey. Harvey stayed down, but got up super quick once the ball was coming his way, no probs afterwards with concussion, bleeding, etcetera.
Larnce cops a bloke with a shoulder to the head, free to play!!!
Wrong, wrong, barking wrong!!!!!!! |

As for the Ballantyne knock, I agree with a poster back a page, no case to answer. If Ballantyne cops anything but an apology for wasting his time, the people in charge need 240volts................for 20 seconds........just to make sure.

The buddy one is a conspiracy no doubt about it. They don't want their precious pin up boy missing out on a top four clash this week. |

so I just heard 2 things.
1. Ballantyne was referred directly to the tribunal because under the MRP rules, the number of weeks that he would have copped would have been too high!!
2. Ballantyne has been cleared by the tribunal (rightly in my opinion).
How on earth does this make any sense????? How is it that the automatic system is so out of line with the ACTUAL tribunal.
Also, I heard Joel Bowden defend the reason why Buddy got off as a Sydney player, when footage from last year shows that for an identical (scarily identical in fact) hit as a Hawk he got one week last year. apparently it comes down to how much injury you cause the opponent!!!!
now this is wrong on two levels.
first, the idea of punishment is to regulate players behaviour on the field (and not to compensate the injured - which is why damage is taken into account in the judicial torts system). accordingly, why damage should be a factor to assess force and perhaps to confirm where contact was made, it MUST NOT be the reason why a player is guilty over not guilty. surely it is the act itself that must be assessed!!!
Secondly, and more importantly, does this system not allow other clubs to manipulate the system to hurt another club. Are the AFL really saying that whether the player continues playing vs being subbed out that this has a bearing on the number of weeks. In the Sidebottom case, if St.kilda was a genuine chance to win that game, and the player affected was a star player and the saints had a finals berth on the line (and say the saints didn't have a tagger sitting on the bench as the sub but had a forward player), I guarantee you that player would not have been subbed out. the fact that the opposition can dictate outcomes makes the system totally open to manipulation.
what happens come finals time when teams will use any trick to try to get the upper hand?
We are encouraging flopping. We are encouraging bad blood to fester. And as I said earlier, its the conduct we should be focused on and not the injury since its meant to be a deterrent system and not a compensation system.
It is simply wrong. I fear that someone who is trained as a lawyer but who didn't practice law long enough came up with this system and unfortunately, they didn't think through it carefully enough!!!!! _________________ Ohhh, the Premiership's a cakewalk .......

Adrian Anderson's legacy.
Now that Vlad & Mini Me are both gone, maybe things will improve. Just have to get rid of that Carlton Muppet. _________________ I hold a cup of wisdom, but there is nothing within. |

I think the Viney ruling has dug a hole for the MRP. Since then it seems the number of head high hits have increased significantly, and the number of players getting off has increased even more. The AFL will surely look to clarify the rules before next season.
That Myers one though, to me, even if the outcome wasn't severe, should have been a couple of weeks. What was he doing, throwing his elbow out like that? I'm guessing though that it was rated as reckless not intentional and that the impact was seen as medium or low. Still doesn't seem right that mostly accidental hits can attract 3-4 weeks just because the opponent was unluckily injured, but crazy stuff like what Myers did is ok because he didn't inflict any damage. |
The bold sums up my thoughts on what's going on at the moment.
Go back to ruling on the intent.
The game is pretty much clean these days, there are no out-and-out thugs running around anymore - maybe the odd subtle dirty bugger, but you'll always get that.
The Ballantyne thing is a prime example - because the poor dear Jencsh got hurt they refer it to the tribunal, if he had have just gotten up nobody would've batted an eyelid. Ballantyne did nothing wrong. (Apart from being born that is..... ) _________________ "I am a great sage, equal of heaven.

And yeah E & Doc63, it's taking a little bit too long to purge all the Adrian Anderson-ness out of the competition isn't it???? _________________ "I am a great sage, equal of heaven.

I don't actually think that the MRP/tribunal dynamic is broken. It's actually a good system. The crucial thing here is that the Ballantyne 'incident' should never have been cited, and if it was then it should have simply been thrown out at the first available opportunity. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

I know this is kinda old news but....
I was just watching the "last time we met" bulldogs v collingwood vid on Collingwoodf.com.
The fourth quarter, a bulldogs player whacks Maxwell in the head with an elbow.
Maxwell goes off bleeding.
No free kick.
No report.
Commentators on the TV conveniently ignore it also.
What the? |
