well, it used to be about the separation of church and state. It's difficult to apply the same mentality to mosque/synagogue/ashram/whatever and state..................

Shame that a decent topic has gone to ****.
You are in a Christian Country, you abide by their laws. If I went to a islamic country, i would have to abide by their laws, thats why I will never go to one for.
You can attack me all you want, but the minute you touch my family, my friends or my country, thats when it gets nasty.
If there is ever an attack on Australia, mark my words, I will go down fighting, and I will take as many of them with me as I can.
Rasist? If being bloody proud of my country, my way of life, my family and friends is being Rasist, then so be it.

Just so we know we all stand, I'm completely athiest and always have been. Guys we are not living in a christian society!!! Have we returned to the enlightenment? Secularism is what Australia and most modern states are founded on, it is the bloody building block from which everything else starts.
Muslims can do whatever the hell they want whilst they are here, just as a Christian, Jew, Buddhist or Hindu person can. Again, we are not a Christian society. We do have WASP'y heritage, but one last time, Christianity is not mentioned anywhere in the constitution.
Now specifically referring to the school, I think that technically (meaning legally) the school is probably in the right given that a contract is signed between the parents and the school which probably had in it some sort of uniform clause. This is what the court probably found and considered in its ruling.
However, from a social standpoint, i think it is pretty clear that the refusal to allow religious dress in the school is purely ideological and very very xenophobic. The school wants to maintain its image of a upper-middle class institution, with mostly anglo roots. If the focus was purely on education then i doubt the dress of the children would be that important... This seems to be an obvious case where image is valued above understanding and knowledge in this school. And the valued image is clearly not a Muslim, nor a Multicultural one.
I think the root of this kind of thinking can be seen to eminate from leadership, Mr. Johnny %@^#ing Howard. Apart from Tony Abbot there is not a man in this country that i despise more, and no one has done more to return this country to White Australia then Howard has.
Can i throw some facts out there just to stimulate some discussion, as I know that most fear arises from what people don't know about and understand...
Did you know that the HUGE majority of muslims do not wear the burqa (full dress, incl. face covering) which Howard finds so confronting?
Did you know that most muslims do not even wear the hijab (head scarf)?
Did you know that 3 radical ideologues from other countries have been caught by ASIO because Muslims attending mosques have kicked them out and reported them directly to ASIO when they tried to spread anti-australia/west propaganda?
Did you know most ASIO people i have spoken to (as part of my research report into the issue) have said that Muslim leaders in Australia are the most important weapons on our side in the constant struggle against radical ideologies?
And finally, did you guys know that most Muslim-Australians feel that Australia is currently abiding by Sharia law?
