Would like more info on this, the first pick is a bit of a sacrifice but the pick in the 50's isn't, surely it will be way more severe then this? 200,000 out side salary ffs, smash them, imagine if we were giving pendles that, we would be destroyed

This does smell a lot like the old police lead statement before the taped interview begins.

I reckon big Andy has given them the "it's in your best interests to relinquish the picks" speech and then let Adelaide announce it so it looks like it was their initiative.

A sensible move. Everyone knows that they are guilty and will pay in picks. But there is no possible way that the AFL could organise a fair trial and have it all complete before draft day, and it's pretty much impossibly to cancel picks after that. But if Adelaide had hung onto the picks, the reality is that they would be seen as taking unfair advantage of the timing and get penalised more in the long run.

In short, they have done the smart thing.

Melbourne, on the other hand, is going to get hammered when the time finally arrives.

Wow, entree penalties before a finding's even been made! Justice, AFL style. Can you imagine if our courts ever gave this kind of thing a go? "Let's agree that you get 6 months in jail now, and we'll get back to you with the real sentence when we've ascertained your guilt.".

What, you mean like when the courts deny bail?

Arguably, although one might say this is a very different process. Obviously the main point of difference here is that the defendant has been (ostensibly) permitted to mitigate their own punishment. Not necessarily even a bad idea, but amusing nonetheless.

Bah. 2012 give up picks 20 and 54.

In 2014 it could be picks 6 and 32 or lower.

Smart move by them.

In practical terms, I assume this means Collingwood now has the chance to pick the next Danny Stanley instead of the next Ryan Cook?

Ryan Cook: 14 games, 1 goal, played 0 AFL games last year. Won't play next year either. Shocked

Danny Stanley: 37 games, 21 goals, played 20 AFL games last year. Will be one of the first picked for his club next year and will play all games if not injured. Smile

Yep, I'll take the Danny Stanley, thankyou.
