As a ruckman, Witts is nowhere near Jolly's level. Rucking is far more than jumping and tapping, and real effectiveness really only comes with experience.

I used to be undecided, but now I'm not so sure.

Not a break out game. Improvement will be gradual. He still needs time but will repay us in spades.

It could be worth holding onto Jolly in a Ben Hudson Type role next year

Witts is improving in every game he plays but last night wasn't his breakout game by any means. I like the fact that he's offered more than what Lynch would have offered in the last few weeks since he returned to the side.

Witts is a good forward option as well which I like as he's able to free up Cloke and Reid when the need arises.

As SEN said last night, it would be more Hudson-Jolly and Witts-Lynch so don't think Jolly really affects Witts

Would be great for Jolly to go around for another year, if you have Witts developing and a couple of other options you can rotate the ruck options all year then none get burnt out, Jolly could play like Ottens at the Cats, a few games all year then star come September

If a team has a decent forward line and Reid will be needed down back you could almost get away with Lynch, Cloke and Witts with Lynch playing more up the ground, Cloke around 40-50 and Witts deep

If by breakout you mean that he did well enough to confirm, completely, that baby Huey will be a fine player and a real asset in the years ahead, then yes, for me, this was a breakout game. I was not sure before, but i don't think there's any doubt now. Bifg men take time, but the early signs are great.

I think we should give Jolly another year, but tell him that he is unlikely to play all games. Whatever happens, we are going to need atleast one experienced ruck.

Good morning Mr Joel- this....

I think Jolls could play one,maybe two more years as the old-hand in the ruck.

Other teams will be in awe in a year or two when we have Witts/Grundy/Cloke/ Reid/ Jolly rotating through the team's forward line, although, clearly, not all in the one game ( too top heavy).

Jolly will be a great mentor for these two young behemoths.

I like what I see with Witts but its the stuff he does without the ball that worries me.
I would think that Q stick adds more defensive pressure atm, but then again what would a Sandilands offer in that department?
I actually like the ruck combo we have now because Huddo does a lot of repeat efforts and gets down and dirty in the packs, I've seen him down on his knees getting the ball after he has finished rucking.
Hope Jolly and Dids hang around in 2014, can never have too much class.

Agreed.

Witts did some really good things however he needs to do more defensively. At times it appeared he was spectating.

Getting game time iinto him is vital to his development & he is currently playing along-side his ruck coach!

Positive signs, trending in the right direction & looks like he'll be a ripper for us if he continues as he has been. However not a break out game yet IMO.

If he converts his shots for goal better than he has so far then he will do wonders.

Really liked:

1. The pluck mark from behind;
2. The punch on for 15-20 meters from the wing through a contested marking situation that ultimately resulted in a goal;
3. Some of his ruckwork; &
4. Some interception work / giving off work to our runners.

Witts has a lot to learn about defending the goal line when someone else is having a shot. Was very poor on a few occasions last night allowing marks on the goal line / square and uncontested rushed behind. He'll learn from the review though. Other signs good.

Witts has a lot to learn about most aspects of the game. The encouraging thing is he's showing improvement each game.
