^Agree, Tannin, though perhaps they're one and the same phenomenon in this case!

The question of merit is an interesting one & ignores the realities (quite rightly pointed out by Mark Kenny above) - of course Tone ain't alone when it comes to political compromises & it would be nave if not hypocritical to make the accusation that he is.

The fact that he had only one woman for a country where women represent more than 50% of the population is madness but seemingly consistent with the view put forward by Prime Minister Gillard & others regarding the mad miners monk .

I like the idea.

There is no debate about minorities having a quota - women are not a minority (except in the mad monks mayhem of a cabinet).

PTID, as long as you continue to use ridiculous pseudonyms to describe anyone you dislike, you'll continue to appeal only to yourself.

Which I suspect is your primary audience anyway.

Fundamental rule. Always address your conversation to the most intelligent person in the room. Obviously, PTID could be excused for talking to himself a lot but, being a gentleman, he also speaks to smart cookies like WPT and Nick and TP and Swoop and Jezza and David.

(If you are feeling confused again, just look at the pictures and nod here and there. Don't say too much and, with any luck, people will think you understand.)

The number of women in the cabinet is not a good thing, but there is a fundamental thing most people have missed in the selection of cabinet.

There were bugger all women in the shadow cabinet that was very stable for nearly 6 years.

When selecting a cabinet, priority should be given to people who had been doing the shadow cabinet role as they should have an understanding of the issues. You don't just throw everything up in the air and start from scratch, the premise is people move from shadow ministries to the real ones and keep all the contacts and knowledge they've accumulated while in the shadow role. Unless of course they were an under performer in shadow cabinet, in which case they should have been removed.

Unfortunately, the coalition shadow cabinet was male dominated and none did bad enough jobs to warrant their removal to place a promising but inexperienced female in the job just for the sake of gender balance.

That's a reason, not an excuse. The fact is the party has failed to attract and develop talented women. The cabinet is the culmination of that, not a personal statement on Abbott as some people want to make it.

OK, gather your rocks, work up the bile and on the count of three, fire away.

Well I'd rather have the one nasty bit of work woman they have than two or three if the second option is Mirabella and the third option is O'Dwyer!!

Not when half of them are cast-iron duds. More than half, actually, but we should take into account the severe lack of talent Abbott has to work with. FFS, he still has demented morons like Abetz on the front bench, and a bumbling incompetent like Hockey in the bloody Treasury of all places!

The reality, as anyone who follows politics knows, is that Abbott promised everyone on the front bench a share of the ministerial spoils well before the election because he could read the polls as well as anyone and he knew he was more unpopular than any opposition leader in recorded history and although he felt (correctly) that he could win government despite that handicap, he had to head off any talk of a leadership change. This was why he promised jobs to everyone, and now that he's made his bed he has to lie in it.

Yes, six years. Abbott has been a major part of that party for a very long time; where is his voice on the record trying to deal with the issue? It's an organizational culture problem, and as such Abbott has to take substantial blame for it, especially if there is no evidence of him doing anything meaningful about it for the last 20 years, and plenty of evidence for him cultivating the present culture of the party.

We have a General in charge who is going to tell the other services what to do. lmao working in defence the animosity between forces is unreal. This is going to be fun times especially as we barely have enough boats that can cover our coastline as it is let alone the manpower. We are building two LHD's HMAS Canberra and HMAS Adelaide and we do not have supply ships suitable for them we will have to lease them from Spain. We can build the ships required the trouble is we have a whole fleet ready for change over and has to be completed by 2020. We could have General MacArthur in charge but he could still not do miracles. Maybe a few prayers and mass will do the trick. lmao

Don't know if the merit argument is supported by the elevation of Matthias Corman to the front bench, he makes those two seem charming

Oh, do not be unfair here, PTID. Abbott is a man with a well-heard voice on womens' issues, and he has frequently spoken out on a wide variety of matters pertaining to fairness and equality, such as women normally doing the ironing and women not having the biological capacity for important work. I'm not sure how Bishop got the Foreign Affairs gig, actually - presumably it was because Abbott didn't rate it as an important ministry needing an actual man to do it.

(Mind you, Rudd , Peacock, and even Downer all seemed to go OK in the job (apart from the usual fuckups) so given that, maybe Abbott thinks that even a woman could probably manage it 'till there is a war or something else important to attend to.)

Picked up this in my post under the stability point. It's a fair one to make and I'm still not sure where the argument sits from some on here of merit versus quota.
The Director of my company is a women as are 3 of the six GM,s. They all do a great job and each would be staggered if they were appointed because we were one female short of a quota.

Most on here though now are so predictable.
Just now again starting to wonder on the point of conversing in here again.
All your gonna get here now are incoherent, abusive, repetitive, ramblings of rhetoric that would fit comfortably within an asylum.
Then if you don't agree and post as much you get the obligatory post from our resident genius form up high questioning your intelligence because your not a sheep who blindly agrees with the rhetoric.
Ah we'll, predictability is in a way comforting and to be honest it's funny shit. Very Happy
