I work at the coal face with the Clients of Social Workers daily I can tell you the difference when I decide to get involved and solve an issue the Client may have is immense. If I inform the Case Manager of an issue say a blown light in a DHS home it takes ages if I contact the authorities directly(against policy I might add) that need to be contacted it gets done asap.

Same as the emphasis on maintaining the Clients dignity, one client needed to do exercises with his OT but the OT would always get a knock-back when he asked the Client. The one time when I was there I didn't ask I told the Client it was time for his exercises and he was fine, the OT was amazed so I told him sometimes you have to tell the Clients what they have to do and not ask permission. My Clients dignity is maintained as he gets the exercise he requires to help him maintain his quality of life.

Sometimes all the feelgood words about dignity, self worth ect needs to be bypassed with a touch of common person sense. The way the career path is designed means that many Social Workers have NEVER been out in the real world as they spend years studying to pass their course with what seems only limited exposure to the real day to day needs of the people they'll be tasked to manage as Clients.

So yeah reading that out take I feel it's missing a little feeling for common sense, we're dealing with people here not just numbers on a file that will make up a stats sheet for the next round of funding applications.

On the OP, I'm getting further info on that story and its factual context (aside from the obvious, which is bad enough), from an extremely reliable and knowledgeable source in the field. Will report back with what I find out.
