Sometimes the future is here now Dave.

You reckon we would have won 2010 without Ball, jolly and Brown?

We might of won it without Brown but Probably not Ball and Jolly.

But when these old guys retire who will Hawthorn have Left?

Underestimate both the Hawks and Geelong at your peril DTM. These teams have been very good at a number of levels and I am sure you will see them there about for years to come. We have certainly not done as well as these teams but have do much better than many others.

Geelong are on the Way Down at the Moment and I can see a Potential of them missing the Finals this year.

I still have the Hawks as the best team in the Comp

I've been saying the Cats are gonna fall for years Dave, I gave up around 2010.

Interesting hypothetical Stui. Maybe we would not have won in 2010, but would the alternate kids we'd drafted set us up for 2011-12-13. Left us better placed in 2014 and provide the senior core going forward? We'll never know.

Of course you can learn from the best and only one team can be the best.
We havent topped up that well with recycled players in recent times but we have clearly got a fair bit right in other areas over the last few years. Its an interesting analysis but there is a lot more to maintaining sustained success than introducing a few good recycled players into a list.
Nothing has changed since the draft was introduced, adding early picks into your club is still the best way to develop your club up to a level of ongoing success ( assuming your recruiting people are competent ) Anything else just falls in behind that philosophy. I very much doubt in two years if we will have regretted swapping our early round picks for a couple established players to
fill a couple holes.

If you can get a premiership, you take it.

Plan for the future all you like, so are (now) 17 other clubs. You can do everything right and still be not good enough because someone else was just that bit better.

You can only control what you can control and that isn't other teams lists.
if we didn't do what we did to win the flag in 2010, we may have done damage in 2011-13 or we may still be celebrating 1990.

If you have the opportunity to win a premiership, take it.

FKN A

But in saying that, I think that's what Bucks did in 2012, we just fell short.

It pisses me off something awful, that our own Graham Wright, our great dasher and premiership player, is actually helping these bastard Hawks with recruiting good talent. Sure, its his job now, but hes so damn good at it, that we should get him back at the Pies as soon as we can, we need a guy like him with that kinda magic nous that can turn hacks like Hale into ready made players.

Don't disagree, just not as sure it's as black and white as that either. Happy to bank the 2010 flag though.

Getting back to the OP though, how much of it is the players they steal, and how much of it is the playing group they add them to?

Thats exactly what happened in 2002/3. The Brion's had extra room in their salary cap to mould a really good team. Nothing we could do about it except to come within 9 points in 2002... Rolling Eyes
