Yeah, bloody useless teachers.

BTW I really liked the mark Twain classic the enchanted faraway tree, it's right up there with the Enid Blyton classic the prince and the pauper for mine.

Um, sure. Do you have a phone number I can ring? Shocked

Or perhaps I could accost him at training. "You know, Jamie, I love watching you play, but something's been bothering me..." Laughing

Ah, yes, facism ! It is outrageous that there is still, in this day and age, discrimination on grounds of face.

Confused

Yeah, fair point, though Bruce ensures that that will always be annoying. Razz

Two differences: 1) It's obviously a nickname, because no-one in their right mind would actually call their child "Buddy". It would not be obvious to a casual observer that Elliott is called anything else.

2) It's his actual nickname. Like, people actually call him that. Does Jamie actually answer to "Billy" in real life?

My nephew's name is Buddy. His brothers names are Nate and Cash, sister is Ava. It's a brave new world.

Doubt Billy was born when Twain penned anything.

And I think the use in this instance is linked the the 2000 movie of the same name.

On the OP, is it really an issue?

Immediately thought the same thing. So did Plugger and Dipper.

Others have already noted that Enid Blyton wrote The Magic Faraway Tree, which I am assuming is where Hiss must live.
I read it as a kid and did not remember a character called Billy Elliott so I googled it, as I'm guessing Hiss did, judging from his confusion. Would you believe the star of the movie Billy Elliott has been cast as a character in the film version of The Magic Faraway Tree?
The best bit, though, is the name of the actor who played Billy Elliott is Jamie Bell.
How spooky is that? Billy is called Jamie and Jamie is called Billy.

As for the commentators calling him Billy, so do I. Jamie Turner is a premiership player so I can't diss that name as much as that young Packer boy and that frightful J'amie from Chris Lilley's shows make me want to, but I've seen some great Billys on the footy field over the years - Barrott, Goggin and the immortal Picken. Billy for me, and doesn't he fit the number 5 guernsey with distinction.

There is a place called Others noted that Enid Blyton wrote The Magic Faraway Tree which he or she is assuming.

Good pick-up re: Jamie Bell. In later life, he also played a male dominatrix (?) in Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac. That film's perhaps a little too close to home for Hiss, though.

The masculine of dominatrix is dominator, and now I'm having involuntary evil Wayne Johnston thoughts - out! out! begone! vile creature from the darkest blue cesspits!
Fighting to resume normal cerebral transmission here - hmmm - surfacing - breathing normally - sigh of reliefe and it's OK again. I just visualised Heater running down Riewoldt in 2010 and all is peace and serenity and equilibrium again.

wow this thread has been taken to strange places… par for the course when Hiss gets going i guess Smile

What they call Elliott him doesn't bother me so much… what he does on the footy field is fantastic though! He is a classy finisher. Strong candidate for AA this year!
