Simple formula:

AFL Greed = Media Win x (Fans Lose)

Answer = Fans lose big time.

TV broadcasts will be saturated with dumb Aussie advertising to pay for the greed of the AFL.

Again Fans Lose.

Why is it every time we get 1 of these deals we lose some level of FTA exposure? Weren't the public promised FTA access wouldn't be compromised by pay TV coverage?

It's all pay TV have so they are willing to pay more than FTA who are struggling. Even more so now that Netflix et al are here. The sooner we move to a subscription streaming model the better.

I bet there was no mention of HD broadcast. A mate was over here recently and he was flabbergasted at the quality of broadcast we were watching on espn/btsports - he hadn't seen HD footy in years

In all likelihood there will be more FTA games shown in Melbourne than in the current deal. Channel 7 will show four live games in rounds with either a Thursday night or holiday game and three in other rounds (making about 3:5 per week). It was strongly hinted in the Q&A session (and seemed common knowledge among the journos asking the questions) that News Corp will on-sell a Saturday afternoon game to Ten, and this seems likely unless the ACCC prevents its buy-in into Ten (which would mean 4.5 live FTA games into Melbourne).

Currently there are three live and one on delay.

Reading between the lines, it may be that Foxtel "outbid" Nine (and perhaps Seven) for the Saturday afternoon game with the intention of on-selling it if and when the Ten deal is permitted.

HD broadcast is also part of the new agreement, and may come in before it commences.

I saw Murdoch at the press conference on the news this morning and it made me think that the days of the AFL supporting "progressive' causes are probably numbered.

Yes we were, but I don't think any minimum was set.

To all the moaners on here - this is a massive win for the AFL over the rugby league (I refuse to call in NRL coz it ain't National!)

$2.508 B vs likely $1.7 B at best. This will help develop the game in the northern states + grass roots.

The rugby league were chest beating for the last week and now they have been blown away again by the AFL. Not only are their crowds down they can't claim they are the number 1 footy code. If it wasn't for Origin they wouldn't even get $1B.

Can someone please tell me if the Saturday afternoon game (on whichever channel shows it) HAS to be delayed on TV?

Don't know why the AFL don't just phase in their own channel. Cut out the middle man and get all the advertising revenue.
