Quote: | Iraqi forces and volunteer fighters have managed to liberate a major northern town from the Daesh Takfiri terrorists, military officials say.
The spokesman of Iraq’s Joint Military Command Brigadier General Yahya Rasool said on Tuesday that army troops and paramilitary fighters, known as Popular Mobilization Forces, retook the town of Baiji in Salahuddin Province earlier in the day.
Baiji is located about 180 kilometers (112 miles) south of the major city of Mosul, which fell to the Takfiri militants in June 2014. The town, which is home to Iraq’s largest oil refinery, has been the scene of fierce clashes between terrorists and pro-government forces over the past weeks. |

Good stuff, how far into the future?
Does that oil refinery have anything to do with success or failure?
Just imagine if they all looked at each other and saw flesh, hair, eyes to the soul, instead of Islam, Isis, Christianity. It's just crazy. I don't get how anyone blows away another human being for no good reason at all. Doesn't feel the pain of their bullet in their dreams.
If their was no religion, would their be no wars, or would they just find another excuse for their thirst for power and money? |
I can't answer the first question in regards to how far away a formidable offensive consisting of the Iraqi army and Shia militias is capable of reclaiming Mosul from ISIS, but losing Tikrit and Baiji means ISIS only has a stronghold in Mosul and the Anbar province (Western Iraq). They've made serious gains in Syria but are losing their grip in Iraq thankfully.
The article I've posted below provides an insight into the importance of reclaiming Baiji and weakening ISIS in a revenue sense.

Good article, thanks TP. And yeah, the colonials have more than a little blood on their hands. This isn't just about the distant past: to an extent, we're living off the wealth of these dispossessed groups today. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

yep, good article, but while you are apologising (with, I agree, some cause), TP, don't forget to claim the credit for Newton, Darwin, Shakespeare, Faraday, Adam Smith and Churchill, etc etc etc ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) _________________ Two more flags before I die! |

Strictly speaking he wasn't, because he was out of power when that treaty was negotiated. But yeah, he was an ardent imperialist, and a supporter of the system behind Sykes-Picot. He spent a whole career being wrong on major things, and then a miracle happened and he was awesomely right about something that towered above everything else. _________________ Two more flags before I die! |

Sykes-Picot was a treaty signed during the First a World War - 1916, between the Brits & French about who roughly gets what when the war is over and the Ottoman Empire falls. It laid down no precise boundaries.
Churchill however was Colonial Secretary in 1921 and called the Cairo Conference where the modern day borders of Syria, Jordan, Iraq & Saudi Arabia were set. The "lines in the sand" were laid down then with Churchill in many ways calling the shots. The famous joke about Churchill hiccuping and thus moving Jordan's border came from this Conference. It was this conference that decreed that a country now known as Iraq would exist and that the Kurds would have no country of their own. The conference even chose who would be king of Iraq - they chose a Jordanian!
Naturally the Kurds felt betrayed and revolted, so Churchill as Foreign Secretary put and end to the uprising with troops on the ground and famously ushered in the first use of mass bombings as a military tactic when used on Kurdish towns & villages. |

The Sykes-Picot agreement was an absolute disaster for Western-Arab relations. ISIS has stated that one of its key goals is to "reverse the effects" of the Sykes-Picot agreement and that they will "break" other borders as well.
An old article dating back to 2001 summarises what the Sykes-Picot agreement was exactly for those wondering what the significance of it is and of course the agreement itself and the powers that Britain and France held at the time.
