I spotted this on the Aged today and actually read the whole thing and thought it was a very good article.
Quote: | Feminist male-bashing has come to sound like a cliche – a misogynist caricature. Feminism, its loudest proponents vow, is about fighting for equality. The man-hating label is either a smear or a misunderstanding.
Yet a lot of feminist rhetoric today does cross the line from attacks on sexism into attacks on men, with a strong focus on personal behaviour: the way they talk, the way they approach relationships, even the way they sit on public transport. Male faults are stated as sweeping condemnations; objecting to such generalisations is taken as a sign of complicity. Meanwhile, similar indictments of women would be considered grossly misogynistic.
This gender antagonism does nothing to advance the unfinished business of equality. If anything, the fixation on men behaving badly is a distraction from more fundamental issues, such as changes in the workplace to promote work-life balance. What's more, male-bashing not only sours many men - and quite a few women – on feminism. It often drives them into Internet subcultures where critiques of feminism mix with hostility towards women.

Quite long but well written I thought. A number of the observations could be applied to other topics. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

I think it's a good article, and I'm scared to share it on Facebook because of the potential backlash. Perhaps that says something in its own right. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

That definitely says something, it points toward the article being spot on. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Great article. I agree totally.
I love the "mansplaining' bit! Reminds me of day two of our holiday, when we were, um, loudly conversing about giving driving directions. Junior pipes up from the back seat 'so mum when you said yesterday that's the only arguement we will have for this holiday, that's kinda over now?" Me "who's arguing? This isn't arguing, there's no argument, because I'm just right!'
And of course I was!
He has been right once. When he told her not to walk with a lollipop in her mouth on a crowded bus!
I don't like the term feminist, I always think of a big butch Sheila, short hair, grumpy. I prefer equality, and also, being honest about what you can and can't do. Like lifting 80kg slabs of glass! I can't. I did, but I shouldn't have! I won't ever again. And he shall never give directions. Never. Ever. _________________ You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either! |

Haha. We'll see. I have left what I think is a relatively diplomatic comment. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

I don't think David's friends like me. At least one blocked me after I had a discussion with him. |
