His emergence has been one of the best things about this season. Good mark, excellent goalkicker ... can't get enough of him!

Yep it is a real uplifting gain —two newbies up fwd and one an “old” hand
One a kid and both starting their AFL journey together

A major factor why we are where we are

^^^^ Spot on. It's the silver lining to injury that has unearthed Checkers as a more than handy KPF pairing with Cox that mitigates the (rumoured/reported) missing out on Tom Lynch.

I readily admit I get easily confused about rookie rules, but how come Brody is still a rookie, despite having such a good season at senior level last year?

Can anyone explain what has to happen if he is ever to become a permanent Seniors player? I know he came in last year as a replacement for long term injury, but is there any other way he could be promoted permanently? Or will his chances of playing Seniors again depend once again on a (heaven forbid) long term injury to a Senior player?

Thanks to anyone who could clarify this for me. Smile

Rookies can play. The rules changed. There are links somewhere on this BB, maybe in Mighty Magpie's threads.

We likely retained him on the rookie list for list management reasons so we could add the players we did to out primary list.

It doesn't prevent him from playing, we don't need an LTI to elevate him anymore (although we do have Scharenberg if we did) so the only thing stopping him from playing round 1 is form, fitness or team balance.

I'm not sure Brody is best 22. Versatile, but seems to be a bit slow in decision making. I heard his GF was ordinary

He had a sensational season, but given his age, he is not likely to get much better. With JDG and Cox as our two key forwards, he'll be competing with WHE, Stephenson, Beams, Elliott and possibly even Reid, for a spot in our forward line. What makes him valuable, apart from his nouse, strength and marking, is his accurate goal kicking. At this stage he should keep his spot, but he'll be under pressure to hold it as the season progresses I reckon.

Physically i'd agree but more time in the system can only improve his fitness and decision making so despite his age I'd say he can improve.

Whether he does is a different argument

He's best 22 in my opinion. Averaged 2 goals a game and was a very handy forward option.

Though if Reid can step it up and avoid any injuries, then Checkers may have a challenger on his hands for his spot.

I agree - I'd hate to see him out of the side and he is ahead of many on the senior list. He was absolutely the ingredient we needed to get the wins for the 8 last year. He can play down back at a pinch. He played 16 senior games in a row plus vfl last year so he looks durable.
With all the injury prone players we need to nurse I'd expect him to play at least 18.
He deserves to be listed senior - its only logistics and gaming that keeps him out.

Thanks for clarifying that me, K and Stui.

I am glad that he has as much chance as anyone else to get a game this season, as I thought he added stability, consistency and poise to the forward line last year.

I agree Stui - reckon there's more than an even chance he'll improve this year too. He looks incredibly fit and strong and now he's had a taste of the big time in the Seniors, he's probably hungrier than ever to do well. Here's hoping.

A nice piece. It starts with the opening of the new cafe in Hawthorn (with Nathan Murphy, Callum Brown and Jordan Roughead) but covers a fair bit of football territory, too.
